89 Unraveling the Past In the stillness of his office, Alex leaned back in his chair, his mind swirling with Nathanâs words and his own turbulent thoughts. The room felt unusually quiet, a stark contrast to the chaos within him.
âWhy canât it be connected to Emma?â Alex murmured, staring out the window. He grappled with the possibility, however remote, that Emma could have played a pivotal role in his past, unbeknownst to him.
Nathan, pacing back and forth, struggled to process Alexâs suggestion. âYouâre not making sense, Alex.
Think about it logically. You met Emma much later. This⦠this idea of her saving you is justâ¦.. itâs just implausible!â
Alex turned, his gaze intense. âBut what if? What if there are parts of my past, parts of her, that I never really understood?â
Nathan shook his head, frustration evident in his voice. âItâs like youâre grasping at straws, trying to paint her as some sort of heroine. Sheâs not, Alex. She never was.
Alex sighed, a mixture of frustration and confusion clouding his expression. âYouâre so certain, Nathan.
But why? Why are you so sure it wasnât her?â
Nathan hesitated, searching for words. âBecause I know Emma. Sheâs not the type to hide such a thing. She would have used it to her advantage, especially during your marriage.â
Alex pondered Nathanâs words, his mind racing. âBut isnât it possible that she changed? That the Emma I knew back then isnât the Emma she is now?â
Nathan stopped pacing and faced Alex. âEven if she changed, it doesnât rewrite the past. She didnât save you, Alex. Itâs a fact.â
Alexâs gaze drifted back to the window. âBut facts can be misleading, Nathan. Sometimes, we only see what we want to see.â
Nathan, feeling a sense of defeat, sighed heavily. âYouâre not going to let this go, are you?â
Alex shook his head slowly. âNo, I canât. Not until I find the truth.â
Nathan, realizing the futility of his arguments, nodded reluctantly. âFine, Alex. Do what you must. But donât get your hopes up. The past is a tricky thing.â
As Nathan left, Alex remained in his office, lost in thought. The conversation had opened a door to possibilities he hadnât considered before. The idea that Emma might have been more than what he believed her to be was both unsettling and intriguing.
He stood up, pacing the room, each step echoing in the silence. Alex knew that delving into the past would be a journey fraught with uncertainty and revelation. But it was a journey he needed to take, to understand not just Emma, but himself as well.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow into the room, Alex made a decision. He would start 59 Unraveling the Past unraveling the mysteries of the past, piece by piece. And the first step would be to confront the memories he had long buried, to face the truths he had been too blind to see.
