A new high-level vampire had appeared.
Out of habit, I offered citizenship again, but as expected, it was rejected.
âWhat a shame.â
If I could have secured citizenship, the control would have shifted entirely to me. I could have used quests to extract information about the scale of the vampires' forces or the entity they called âthat one.â I could have even eliminated the vampire outright. Most importantly, I could have prevented them from returning with any information about me. In fact, I might have even been able to spread false information back to their base.
A winged vampire, though...
Stopping a vampire capable of flight was, unfortunately, out of my reach. The only one who could feasibly catch up was Kim Geon, with his own ability to fly, but I doubted he could take down a high-level vampire on his own.
âIt canât be helped.â
Besides, the amount of information this vampire could take back was limitedâjust the sight of the World Tree, the transparent barrier that protected it, and the offer of citizenship.
âTheir response was quicker than I expected.â
The first high-level vampire had taken a month to appear after the previous one was killed. Naturally, I assumed it would take a similar amount of time again. But less than a day after the second high-level vampire was killed, a third had shown up.
âDo they sense the deaths of their underlings?â
It wasnât out of the realm of possibility. Even I received system notifications whenever my citizens died.
Still, this turn of events had its benefits.
Thanks to Kim Geonâs pursuit, I now knew the exact location of their base.
Kim Geon was currently tailing the winged vampire. His superior speed, combined with the dark feathers of his familiar blending into the night, allowed him to follow without being noticedâfor now.
While watching Kim Geon maintain a steady distance behind the vampire, I heard my father call out from the kitchen island.
âSon.â
âYes?â I replied, keeping myself on edge in case combat broke out.
âCan we talk for a bit?â
âOf course. Whatâs on your mind?â
He held up a bottle of soju and asked, âWant a drink?â
âIâm fine, thanks.â
âShame.â He poured himself a glass, then smiled as I offered to pour for him. âFill it to the brim.â
The soju rose above the rim of the glass, held in place by surface tension. Satisfied, my father nodded and took a sip.
âSon.â
âYes.â
âYou should come home more often. Your grandmother misses you.â
Grandma was still asleep most of the time. Thanks to the fairyâs growing power, she could now stay awake for ten minutes or so, but she spent most of her days resting. My mother was devotedly caring for her, so I didnât worry too much. Still, I hadnât visited her in a long time, and that was on me.
âIâll visit soon.â
âGood.â
The ramen my father had made, complete with ham and dumplings, was the perfect drinking snack.
âWant a bite?â
â...Sure.â
He handed me a bowl and chopsticks. The greasy broth coated my tongue as I took a sip. It was exactly as Iâd expectedâdelicious. My fatherâs ramen, with its mix of ingredients, had always been surprisingly good.
âTaste good?â
âYes, very.â
With that, he finally got to the point.
âAbout the vampires.â
He emptied his glass, then continued, âWhatâs your plan?â
I refilled his glass and replied, âFirst, we need to gauge their numbers.â
âAnd then?â
âDepending on their scale, weâll plan how to eliminate them.â
My father raised a question that caught me off guard.
âDo we have to eliminate them?â
â...What?â
âIf those vampires have taken over all of Ulsan, isnât it dangerous? What if your people are put at risk?â
His gaze was serious.
âDo we really need to take that risk? Even if they come here to fight, it wouldnât be too late to handle them then. And if it comes down to it, we can just retreat into your safe zone. The barrier will protect us, and weâll be fine.â
He wasnât wrong. If the vampires attacked, they wouldnât be able to penetrate the transparent barrier.
âWhy, then?â he asked.
I paused, asking myself the same question. Why am I so determined to take the fight to them?
Images of the dead flashed through my mindâthose who had perished due to my carelessness despite having gained citizenship. I saw the faces of children crying over their lost parents.
âI...â
I couldnât bear to let something like that happen again.
Despite all the precautions I had in place, I couldnât shake the anxiety. I wanted to cut off any potential for tragedy at the root.
âA month ago, I mistakenly accepted a vampire as a citizen,â I began, recounting the events of that day.
My father listened in silence, his face hardening as I described the horrors that had unfolded.
âDad, they eat people. I canât let that happen.â
As I spoke, I felt my resolve crystallize.
âEven if Ulsan has fallen into their hands, there will still be survivors. Iâm going to exterminate the vampires there and save those people.â
I forced a sheepish smile and added, âOf course, Ha Dong-geonâs party will take the lead, but Iâm not just sitting idly by. Iâll do everything I can to help. This time, Iâllââ
My father suddenly downed his soju in one go and let out an appreciative exhale.
âWhew. Sorry.â
â...For what?â
With a slightly flushed face, he awkwardly refilled his glass and avoided my gaze.
âI thought you were doing this for the experience points.â
â...Excuse me?â
âWell, killing vampires gives a lot of experience, doesnât it? So I thoughtââ
I shot him a withering look as he gulped down more soju.
âYouâre drinking too much.â
âIâm fine. Want more ramen?â
âIâm good.â
Trying to change the subject, my father muttered, âAnyway, sorry for misunderstanding.â
I finished eating and cleaned up just as the high-level vampire reached Ulsan. She didnât slow down as she entered the city, and fortunately, Kim Geon hadnât been spotted yet.
âGoodnight, Dad.â
âYeah, goodnight.â
After ensuring my father had gone to bed, I focused all my attention on The Absolute Eye.
âShe should be arriving soon.â
The high-level vampire flew over Ulsanâs center, Samsan-dong, before sharply descending.
âSo, this is their base.â
From above, the city looked normalâno collapsed skyscrapers, no massive footprints.
âIâm going in.â
[Be careful.]
From a distance, the city appeared peaceful.
But as Kim Geon approached, the true nature of the city began to reveal itself.
********
âHah⦠haahâ¦!â
Park Sae-rom was running for her life.
From behind, the sound of excited vampires chasing her filled the air.
âA human!â
âCatch her!â
Park Sae-româs luck had run out. Hearing her presence, a swarm of starving vampires had gathered in an instant.
Before she knew it, vampires were closing in from the front and sides, baring their fangs.
âUghâ¦â
Desperately holding back her sobs, she struggled to find a way to survive. Just as she began climbing over an apartment complex fenceâ
âThere she is!â
âA human, over there!â
âMove aside!â
She froze mid-climb as more vampires surged toward her from inside the complex.
âAh, shit. Iâm screwed.â
She regretted itâregretted coming here, only to die a pointless death. She had overestimated her abilities.
At that momentâ
âUgh?!â
A sudden force gripped her shoulders and armpits. Park Sae-rom soon realized she was being lifted into the air. Slowly tilting her head upward, she saw the form of a monstrous crow.
âHahâ¦â
It was absurd. She had escaped the vampires, only to be captured by this strange creature.
âThen again, at least Iâm out of there. If I stay sharp, maybe I can escape this monster too.â
She clung to the thought that, given enough time, her abilities would allow her to turn the situation around. For now, she glanced down at the vampires below, who were barking in frustration like dogs chasing a lost prey. The sight amused her enough to momentarily forget her predicament.
âYou idiots! Go to hell, you morons!â she shouted gleefully.
âPlease be quiet.â
A calm voice interrupted her triumphant yelling. Startled, Park Sae-rom slowly looked up.@@novelbin@@
â...Huh?â
âDonât draw more attention from the vampires, please,â said the crow, its beak moving unnaturally as it spoke human words.
She clamped her mouth shut, dumbfounded.
The crow monster carried her to a nearby rooftop, setting her down gently before perching nearby. Its beak opened again.
âI have a few questions for you.â
Still wary, Park Sae-rom took a few steps back and asked, âW-what is it?â
âHow much do you know about the vampires?â
â...About the vampires?â
âYes.â
âWell⦠if you destroy their heart, they die?â
The crow fell silent for a moment before responding.
âIs that all?â
âWait! Hold on! I have a question too!â Park Sae-rom interrupted.
âGo ahead.â
Squinting her eyes suspiciously, she asked, âAre you⦠human?â
It was a question born of a slim hope. In a world overrun by monsters, it wouldnât be strange for some humans to undergo transformations. A talking crow was still easier to believe than some miraculous monster suddenly learning to speak human languages.
The crow answered, âI am human.â
âProve it.â
After a brief hesitation, the crowâs form began to shift. A black bird separated from its body and fluttered away, leaving behind a perfectly ordinary man.
âIs this sufficient?â
!!
âItâs trueâ¦â
The man turned to her and said, âNow, please tell me what you know about the vampires. How many of them are in this city?â
âHmm, youâre asking about their gathering spots? Lucky for you, Iâm an expert in that.â
âPlease share your knowledge.â
âWell⦠I donât know if I can just give such valuable information awayâ¦â
The manâs expression grew cold as he stared at her, unimpressed.
âYouâre quite shameless.â
âWell, thatâs just who I am,â Park Sae-rom replied with a smirk. âIâm kidding, of course. Iâm not that heartless. Just do me a little favorââ
She was about to ask for help escaping the vampiresâ territory when the air hummed, and a cola and chocolate bar materialized in front of her.
ââ¦Will this suffice?â the man asked.
Dumbfounded, Park Sae-rom grabbed the cola first and popped it open.
Fizz.
The sound of carbonation was heavenly. She raised the can to her lips and gulped it down.
â!â
The cola was the real deal. The sharp fizz stung her throat, but instead of pain, she felt pure bliss. Draining the can in one go, she let out a loud burp.
âBuuurp!â
Reaching for the chocolate bar in the manâs hand, she was stopped as he pulled it back slightly.
âAnswer my questions first,â he said firmly.
With a sparkle in her eyes, she replied, âWhat would you like to know, master?â
