Chapter Fourteen: I won't let you.
"Nova, it's time to wake up," Mom says, turning on my light. I groan, covering my face with my pillow. "Come on sleepy head. You have school." she laughs.
I hate mornings.
I sit up, yawning. Damn. Practice last night was rough. After debating if I should even get up and go to school, I finally pull myself up, and out of bed. I walk down the hallway, stretching my sore limbs.
I walk to the bathroom and get in the shower. Once I'm done taking a shower, I walk back to my room and get dressed. I put on my new maroon red Converse.
Suddenly, as I'm drying my hair, the sound of pebbles hitting my window fills my ears. Sighing, I open my window and see Frost with a big grin on her face.
Of course.
She opens her mouth to say something, but I cut her off. "Let me guess. You came to pelt me with rocks, or ruffle my hair."
She giggles, "No.. I just wanted to say, you'll probably never get your blanket back."
"What the hell? Matthews, that's my favorite blanket," I snarl.
"I'm just joking!" she laughs. "It's in the wash."
"Oh thanks," I say rubbing the back of my neck. Well, that was nice of her, I guess. It did need a good wash. My mom got her perfume all over it from the last time I let her borrow it.
"Hey, Matthews?" I ask, still looking at her.
"Can I drive your car today to school? I'll buy you lunch... or whatever."
She looks at me with her big green eyes."Why?"
"Because my car is in the shop," I lie give her a glare.
What am I doing?!
She makes a humming noise and her stupid annoying thinking face. "Whatever I want, you say?" I sigh nodding my head.
I just know this is going to turn out bad. Why did I even ask? And why did I even offer that?
Sometimes, I question my own I.Q.
"Sure! I'll meet you out front in a few minutes!" she beams before shutting her window. I groan, leaning forwards on my window seal.
"You, are, so, stupid," I hit myself on the head with each syllable. I continue banging my head, but I feel a stare on me.
As I look up, I notice Frost staring at me. I wave at her, standing back up straight. She waves back and I close my window and my curtains.
"Idiot," I mutter, banging my head one more time. Pudge jumps on my bed and sits down. He stares at me and meows. "What?" I ask, stroking his head.
He looks at me in amusement before looking at the window.
(A/N: *hisses* he knows.........)
"You're weird," I say to him with a chuckle. I give him one more pet, before I walk downstairs.
Just as I plop down on my couch, I hear the doorbell ring. "Can you get that for me, please!" Mom yells at me from her office.
I jog to the door and open it. Mrs. Matthews stands on my porch with a pan of some chocolate eclair.
"Good morning Nova! I made this for you and your mom!" she beams.
I immediately take it from her, "Oh, Mrs. Matthews you didn't have to."
She could've hurt herself. Why didn't Frost's dad bring it? The least he could do is help a pregnant woman out.
"It's fine! Oh, and Frost is outside now," she says. I look, and sure enough, Frost is waiting by her car.
"Okay," I say and turn around, "I'll be right back." I walk back inside my house and set the pan in the fridge. "Mom I'm leaving now!"
"Okay have a nice day at school!"
I grab my bag and walk outside to find Mrs. Matthews gone. I walk over to Frost and her car, and hold out my hand, "Keys."
"Wha... never mind. Here," she drops them in my hand.
There is absolutely no way I'm letting Frost drive me in the winter time.
I get in the driver side and she gets in the passenger side. "How bad is your car? My dad could come fix it."
"It just.. uh.. it has a... scratch on it." I answer as I start the car. I begin driving and she puts her feet on the dashboard.
"Hey Nova,"
"Yeah?"
"Hi.."
"Shut up Matthews,"
We arrived at school in silence.
"Bye Freckles!" Frost waves at me as I walk away. I roll my eyes and approach Cole.
"Hey," he greets me. "You drove Frost to school? That's a first. I thought you 'didn't like her'."
"Tell me about it. I actually don't even know why I did." I admit and he smirks at me. "What? Why are you smirking like that?"
"Oh no reason, no reason at all."
I hit his shoulder, "Come on. I know you're hiding something." he shakes his head, the smirk still on his face.
Then, I pull him into a head lock, "Tell me,"
"N-No!" he laughs and tries getting free. I begin to laugh as he tickles my sides. I hear an 'awe' and see Frost and Manon with their phones out.
"What a beautiful bromance!" Frost coos, "I ship it!" I glare at her, letting him go. She opens her mouth but gets cut off by the bell. Well, you know what they say.
Saved by the bell.
Me and Cole walked to class and sat where we always sit. Frost and Manon sat by us, as usual. They can never stay away.
"How about.. pizza at your place?"
"No."
"But you said whatever I want!"
"Yes, but that 'whatever' meant without me." I respond to Frost.
"You're so grumpy.." she mutters and pouts. The bell rings and Mr. Earl stands up from his desk.
"Alright class, please get out lesson twenty seven and work on it quietly." Mr. Earl says to the class.
As I'm pulling out my paper, Frost snaps her fingers. "I got it! We can go ice skating at Sweetheart Lake!"
"Oo that sounds like fun!" Manon agrees and nudges Cole. "Want to come?"
"Yeah sure." he answers, and they all look at me.
Damn it Cole.
"And this is when I'm supposed to say 'fine, I'll go only if you'll leave me alone.' right." I grumble and they nod. I rub my temples and sigh. "Fine. I'll go, but that doesn't mean I'll skate."
"Yay!" Frost claps her hands. "This will be so fun! We can go after your guys practice."
What have I gotten myself into? Everything could go just right, but then something bad can happen as well.
"Come on, cheer up." Cole jabs my arm. "What could go wrong?"
"Um, let's see. The ice could crack and someone could fall in, one of you guys can twist your ankles, or someone could crack their head open." I list off some possibilities.
"Okay I get it, but calm down. Nothing is going to happen." he states. I sigh and glance at Frost.
Her blonde hair is in a tight braid and a few strands are loose. She laughs at something Manon says, and butterflies erupt in my stomach. I look away, confused and bewildered.
What in the hell? Why did that even happen! I am in serious need of some help.
"Nova, are you alright? You look... scared." Cole whispers to me.
I nod, "Y-Yeah... yeah I'm fine.."
Trying to focus, I grip my pencil and stare at problem one. Come on, focus.
Maybe it's because I haven't eaten.
Yeah...
That's it..
Lunch, hurry the hell up.
My prayers were answered when lunch rolled around. I ignored Frost the best I could and cut everyone in the line.
Gripping a tray of mashed potatoes and nuggets, I rush to Cole and the team. I slam my tray down, and begin stuffing my face.
"Damn Nova, do you eat ass like that?" Ethan smirks as he looks up from his phone. The other guys laugh along with hum.
I stop eating, "Do you like the taste of my fist connecting with your face?"
He gulps and goes back to his phone.
"That's what I thought."
"Boys, be nice." Coach says as he walks by us. Suddenly, arms wrap around my neck and squeeze me.
"Hiya boys," Frost's voice is heard. I sigh and shove a chicken nugget in my mouth.
"Oh look, it's your girlfriend."
"Ethan, I will slap you so hard."

Practice went by faster than I expected. Maybe its 'cause I didn't want to be here at Sweetheart Lake.
The so called 'Sweetheart Lake' sounds like where all the couples go.
Manon struggles to keep her balance, but Cole keeps ahold of her. I scroll down my feed utill I hear giggling. I snap my head up seeing Frost talking to some boy. I watch as he skates around her.
My eyes narrow and I get up from the bench. I start to walk to the little coffie shop.
"Can I get a coffee, plain." I state more then ask. I'm just annoyed as usual.
"Coming right up," The girl with a pink beanie on says, "That will be one fifty." I nod taking out my wallet and handing her the money. I take my coffee from her hands.
"Thanks." I mumble out and turn around, walking back to the bench.
"Hey Nova!" Frost waves at me as I sit down. I flip her off, taking a sip of my drink.
Ah. Bitter like my personality.
She puts a hand over her heart. The boy looks at me before giving her a hug and skating away. Frost skates off the ice and waddles over to me.
"What's wrong? You look mad." she asks, sitting down next to me. I don't answer her and ignore her. I slowly sip my drink, staring off into space.
She sighs and gets up. "I'm going to go bother Manon and Cole, want to come?" I once again ignore her.
"You know, ignoring me will just make me annoy you more." she says before waddling back on the ice. I roll my eyes and pull out my phone.
There isn't many people out on the lake this month. Last year in December, there were way more than this.
I successfully toss my empty coffee cup in the trash can near by.
Mom: I hope you are having fun and everything is going all right!
4:21 p.m
Me: Yeah, everything is going just find.
4:21 p.m
I look up at the sound of screaming. Frowning, I watch everyone scramble off the ice, except for Frost. I stand up, "Hey what's going on?" I ask a lady who is running by.
"Th-The ice! It's cracking and that poor girl can't move!" she yells and points to Frost. Panic sets in me and I bolt towards the lake.
"Frost! Hold on!" I yell, but I get pulled back by Cole. "What the hell are you doing? Let me go!"
"Dude you're going to get hurt." he tries to pull me back, but I shrug him off. "The ice will break if there is more pressure-"
I turn to face him, "I don't care! We need to get her off the ice!" Cole's eyes widen and I look behind me.
I look and see the boy Frost was talking to, walking out on the ice. He slowly stops walking as the ice cracks more beneath his feet.
Is he stupid?!
"No! What are you doing! You're making it worse!" I shout at him, and he looks at me.
"You two are just standing there like idiots," he looks at Frost reaching his hand out, "Take my hand."
"Manon call her mom," I say to Manon. She nods, taking her phone out.
Frost shakes her head no, and that's when I notice her whole body shaking. She looks at me with teary eyes. "Frost you're going to be okay," I tell her, carefully putting one foot on the ice. "Come on, be like the tough Matthews I know."
"I-I'm not t-tough," she whimpers, "I-I just say movie references.."
I search the ice for any spot that isn't cracked. I spot one not too far from her, "Hey Frost, I need you to go right there," I point to the spot.
"I'll fall in!" she cries.
"No you won't," I say and put my other foot on the ice. "I won't let you."
"Nova I'm scared! I don't want to fall in! I haven't even watched Stranger Things, season two yet!" she yells and I roll my eyes.
"Let's be serious for a minute, okay?"
"O... Okay.." she says, nodding. Another crack is heard and she gasps, looking at the ground beneath her.
I snap my fingers, "Hey. Look at me," she looks at me. I very slowly take a step, and hold my hand out.
Almost there..
Stepping on the non-cracked area of ice, I look at her in the eyes, "Walk towards me. Very, slowly."
But, as she takes a step, the ice breaks and she falls in.
