Dazed, Paige rested her chin on Caroline’s shoulders. “You know, Carol, I was scared when I found out!

was pregnant. But Alex’s caring support after I told him helped me let go of my fear and fully embrace this

child.

“Gradually, I felt a deep connection with the child, as if we were one and couldn’t be separated. I also

Paige leaned on Caroline’s shoulder and shut her eyes tightly, disregarding Caroline’s words. She allowed

Caroline to embrace her as she wept endlessly, consumed by excruciating pain.

Only one thing lingered in her mind: the feeling of wanting to die.

Silently, Caroline stood by Paige.

After an unknown duration, Paige gently pushed Caroline away. She hoarsely said, lowering her red,

swollen eyes, “Let’s go back. It’s chilly on the rooftop.”

Caroline felt a sense of fear when Paige behaved this way. She couldn’t fathom what would happen if

Paige were left alone.

Clutching Paige’s hand firmly, Caroline spoke slowly. “Come home with me, okay?”

“No.” Paige’s tone turned cold. “I’ll terminate the pregnancy.”

Caroline was momentarily speechless.

Paige shook her head. “I haven’t met Daniella alone. Even if I did bump into her, we’d only argue. She

never got close to me. Or maybe I frequented the bar too much and contracted it at some point. It only

“That’s impossible!” Caroline interrupted. “This has nothing to do with your past visits to the bar, Paige.

Otherwise, why didn’t it show up in previous check–ups?”

“But I genuinely don’t know what happened!” Paige had a nervous breakdown. “I shouldn’t have gone to

the bar, drank, or conceived this child! I’ve harmed the child and maybe even Alex!”
