Chapter 1077
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Jake responded casually with a simple âNo.â
Kallie spoke up quickly.
âI think we should avoid taking Elma to Miss Payneâs mentor. We donât trust him, and weâve never met him. There could be risks if we take Elma there.â
Jake looked at her with a puzzled expression.
âYou were so eager to find me yesterday just for this?â
Kallie nodded in confirmation.
Jake was at a loss.
âWhy didnât you just tell me directly? There was no need to wait until I was finished with work. Itâs not a big deal, and I wouldnât have been upset about it.â
Kallie let out a soft sigh.
âOur relationship isnât at a stage where I feel I can speak so openly. Lacey is someone you introduced, and I worry that stepping over the line might make you feel I doubt your judgment. Even though I donât recall the past, the children are ours, and Iâve noticed youâre more involved with them than I was.â
Jake looked surprised.
âWhat makes you say that?â
Kallie thought for a moment and then explained, âThe children live here with you, and Sophie has mentioned that I didnât spend much time with them before.â
Jake saw Kallieâs saddened expression and felt a sharp tug at his heart. Looking into her eyes, he spoke softly, âNo, youâre completely wrong. You are attentive and responsible. The children adore you because youâve given them so much. If anything, I am the one who is indebted to you.â
Kallie shook her head, smiled gently, and said, âIâve left the past behind. Itâs never too late to begin anew.â
Jake smiled slightly.
âIâve been feeling the same way. I trust no one else with Elmaâs care. Yet, I must admit, her condition is graver than we feared. She must continue her treatment without pause.â
Worry flickered in Jakeâs eyes as he continued, âIâll do my best to find a suitable doctor quickly. Weâll give it three days. If we see no improvement, weâll have to consider Laceyâs mentor.â
Hearing this made Kallieâs heart sink. She clasped her hands tightly and nodded in agreement.
âYouâve thought of everything. I trust your judgment.â
After speaking, Kallie grasped Jakeâs hand, seeking to reassure him.
âDonât worry. Elma will get better.â
Jake nodded and then impulsively kissed her, moved by the moment. Had they not been so famished, he might have kissed her again.
At her resistance, Jake reluctantly stopped, though his deep eyes seemed to hold a hint of grievance.
