Chapter 202
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Jake couldnât shake off the nagging suspicion that there was more to it than met the eye. Why had he ended up at Kallieâs place out of the blue? It was possible he had forgotten some events.
This thought sent a chill down Jakeâs spine. For him, the events during the time he couldnât remember seemed insignificant now. The real issue was the medication he had been given, which was causing more than just severe headaches. The possibility that it might impair his memory and disrupt his need for constant clarity terrified him.
âEdgar!â Jake called out loudly.
Edgar hurried into the room, concerned. âMr. Reeves, whatâs wrong?â
Jakeâs face was stern. âHow many days of memories have I lost?â
Edgar responded cautiously, âAt least three days, sir.â
Jakeâs hand clamped down on the railing, his grip tightening so much that the veins in his forearm stood out. Taking a deep breath, Jake realized he needed to alter his plans.
âBring Kallie back. Make sure our people keep a close eye on her, ensuring her safety. If it becomes necessary, send her away at the crucial moment, to a place even I canât track,â Jake ordered. âReach out to top specialists in brain injuries from abroad. We canât let this illness linger any longer.â
Edgar let out a weary sigh. Jake had initially planned to endure the situation. Lately, they had been amassing more and more evidence. Yet, despite all their efforts, the mastermind remained elusive.
Realizing that the situation had spiraled out of his control, Jake made a decisive move.
As Kallie exited the Hayes Group building after her workday, she spotted a familiar car in the parking lot, surrounded by recognizable facesâall of them Jakeâs people.
The car sat silently beside Kallie, almost as if it feared she might miss it and walk away. Kallie inhaled deeply, approached the car, and tapped on the window.
The glass slid down to reveal Edgarâs face. He offered her an apologetic smile. âMadam, please, get in the car.â
Taking another deep breath, Kallie pulled out her phone and began typing. âDidnât Jake and I agree that Iâd have some freedom for a while? Iâve just started at Hayes Group, and with Jeromeâs health on the mend, it feels right for me to start getting out more.â
Edgar cleared his throat, beginning his explanation with a hint of formality. âHereâs the situation. Mr. Reeves still believes the best option is for you to stay at his residence. You donât need to worry about a thing. Mr. Reeves wonât be there during your stay, nor will Miss Miller, so youâll have complete privacy. As for your freedom, that shouldnât concern you either. We have dedicated staff there to ensure your safety. Just inform Mr. Reeves of your plans beforehand.â
Kallie let out a chuckle laced with sarcasm. âHow is this any different from being watched all the time?â
Unable to come up with a rebuttal, Edgar simply exited the car and opened the door for Kallie. âMadam, I have no choice. I hope you can see where Iâm coming from.â
Kallie inhaled deeply, pondering her limited options. She had made a promise to Jake previously. It seemed Jake still believed that keeping her close could serve as a bargaining chip against Brent.
With the immediate crisis concerning the Hayes family resolved, Kallie reasoned if her compliance could spare the Hayes any further difficulties, she could endure Jakeâs demands for a while longer. Without Sarah around, the complications would certainly be fewer.
Resigned, Kallie climbed into the car.
At the Reeves Group, Jake had just wrapped up a meeting when he spotted Sarah waiting by the door.
Sarah seemed weary from the wait, yet her face brightened into a smile upon seeing Jake.
âJake, I finally caught you! Iâm so tired. Can we go home now?â Sarah asked with a hopeful look.
Jake pulled his hand away from Sarahâs grip, his face void of expression. âNot today. Thereâs too much to handle at work. I canât leave yet.â
Sarahâs smile vanished, her lips freezing in a forced grin. This indifferent demeanor from Jake was new and unsettling.
Feeling a wave of unease, Sarah cautiously asked, âJake, are you still upset with me for what happened to Kallie?â
For the first time since the conversation began, Jake turned to face Sarah directly, his eyes piercing and cold. âIsnât it obvious why Iâm upset?â
Sarahâs voice wavered with emotion. âBut Jake, you have to see things from my perspective. I love you. My actions were driven by that love. If I didnât care about you, I wouldnât get worked up about another woman having your child.â
As if understanding suddenly dawned on her, Sarah stepped closer to Jake, her voice tense. âYouâre still in love with Kallie, arenât you? Thatâs why youâre so angry.â
Sarah fixed her gaze on Jake, searching his face for any hint of his thoughts. Yet, she found nothing on his poker face.
As Sarah voiced her suspicions, Jake merely sneered in response. âIf you see things that way, then thereâs nothing left for me to say. Since you and I canât communicate properly for the time being, maybe itâs best we separate for a while. Go back to the Miller family, avoid looking for me, and steer clear of the Reevesâ place as well. Iâll be at the company all this while.â
Brushing off Sarahâs hand, Jake turned and left.
âJake!â Sarah called out, her voice tinged with desperation. She moved to follow him, but Edgar stepped in her way.
Overcome with frustration and unable to contain her feelings, Sarah slapped Edgar without a second thought. âGet the hell out of my way!â
The slap took Edgar by surprise, igniting his anger. Yet, remembering his plan with Jake, he managed to suppress his fury.
âMiss Miller, I get why youâre upset, but please hear me out. Things arenât as they seem,â Edgar remarked.
Resentment swelled in Sarahâs eyes as she clenched her teeth. âIf itâs not what Iâm thinking, then what is it? That bitch, Kallie! Why canât she just leave Jake alone? He doesnât love her anymore. Canât she see that? That shameless bitch uses the child sheâs carrying to bind herself to Jake, thinking Iâm powerless against her?â
The malice in Sarahâs gaze deepened.
Edgar felt a pang of annoyance and his head began to throb. He pulled her aside and said, âMiss Miller, you need to know that the child she is carrying isnât Mr. Reevesâ.â
âWhat did you say?â Sarahâs reaction was sluggish, caught off guard by the revelation.
Edgar explained, âActually, the childâs father is Mr. Brent Hayes. Mr. Reeves has been keeping her close as leverage against the Hayes family. Heâs been dealing with a lot of problems at the Reeves Group lately, and his health is failing. With threats both inside and outside the company, he felt he had no other option.
The hospital staff and Melinda are aware of this, though Iâm not sure why Melinda told you it was Mr. Reevesâ child. Mr. Reeves is upset with you because your distrust has hurt him. Iâm only sharing these confidential details because Mr. Reeves allowed me to. Otherwise, I wouldnât dare disclose such sensitive information.â
