Chapter 389
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Kallie, caught in the middle, felt compelled to talk, despite wishing to stay out of it. She addressed Ethan with a mix of frustration and concern, âMr. Brooks, though your wifeâs comments are out of line, she does love you. Maybe if you reassured her more, she wouldnât feel this way.â
Joannaâs fury simmered, but Kallieâs words made her pause and turn. âYou seem to grasp some truths, certainly more than Ethan does.â
Joannaâs compliment hung in the air, ringed with something less warm in her gaze, something sharp and chilling, like a serpent lurking in the shadows. Ethan absorbed Kallieâs advice but remained silent, his features set in a grim expression.
As Kallie moved toward her car, she announced, âSophieâs getting sleepy. Iâll take her home to rest. We can all catch up over dinner another time.â
Yet, Kallie couldnât get in the car since someone seized her wrist. It was Joanna.
Joanna clutched Kallieâs hand tightly, as though she feared Kallie could slip away. âWhy delay dinner? Letâs go tonight. I shouldnât have said those words earlier. If you decline, Iâll assume youâre still upset about me.â
Kallie had a feeling. âMaybe some other time. Sophieâs really sleepy.â
Yet, Joanna was relentless, âYou just donât want to dine with me, do you? If Sophie needs to sleep, let the housekeeper take her home. You have plenty of bodyguards. What could possibly go wrong?â
Ethan couldnât contain himself, âJoanna, thatâs enough. Why are you pressing her like this?â
Joannaâs temper flared. âIâm only inviting her for a meal. Why are you getting so worked up? Do you think I intend to harm her? Ethan, how can you stand there and say you donât care about her? How can you say you feel nothing for her? If thereâs really nothing between you two, why object to a simple dinner?â
Joannaâs last remark came off as a thinly veiled accusation.
Kallie felt trapped. She was well aware that todayâs meal with them was inevitable. Certain things needed to be clarified.
Although Kallie believed Charlee was sensible, she had no desire to curry favor or cause offense to the Martel family. It simply wasnât beneficial for her.
Kallie gently patted Sophieâs head and inquired, âWill you be alright going back by yourself?â
Sophie nodded confidently. âMommy, donât worry. Iâll have the bodyguards and the butler with me.â
Kallie squeezed Sophieâs cheek affectionately and remarked, âYouâre the sweetest girl.â
Ethan was displeased with Kallieâs giving in, but upon noticing Joannaâs long face, he held his tongue.
Joanna chose a quiet restaurant. âKallie, I hope this place is to your liking. I heard youâve rejoined the Nixon family and are living lavishly. Itâs been a while since youâve had a normal life, hasnât it?â
Kallie feigned ignorance to Joannaâs veiled insult and responded with a grin, âNot at all. Despite my current life, I havenât forgotten my previous hardships. Iâm no match for you, though. Youâve been coddled from birth by your parents.â
Glancing at Ethan, Kallie continued, âYou should be more accommodating to your wife. She was once a joyful girl, utterly spoiled by her parents.â
