Chapter 405
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Sophie saw Kallie and wriggled out of Jakeâs arms to hug her mom. âMommy, I missed you so much! Iâm okay. Donât worry. Itâs all my fault. I shouldnât have left with a stranger.â
Kallie saw Sophieâs injury and panicked. âWhat happened?â she asked urgently.
Kallie couldnât help but scold Jake. âWhat were you thinking? Why didnât you take her straight to the hospital when she was hurt?â
Sophie shook her head frantically. âMommy, please donât be mad. Iâm the one who didnât want to go to the hospital. I was afraid you would worry about me if you didnât see.â
The last time those Nixon family goons took Sophie, even though Sophie came back safe and her throat healed later, Kallie cried herself to sleep for nights. Her eyes were puffy every morning.
Sophie loved her mom and couldnât bear to see her heartbroken again.
Sophie reached up on her tiptoes, trying to wipe away Kallieâs tears. âMommy, please donât cry. Iâm right here. I promise, from now on, Iâll protect you. No oneâs gonna mess with you again.â
Jakeâs heart ached as he watched Kallie and Sophie. He stepped closer and said, âSophie, donât worry. Iâll keep you safe. Iâm your godfather, after all.â
Kallieâs tears stopped abruptly. She scooped Sophie up, her face hardening. âGodfather?â she said with an icy smile. âIâm afraid youâre mistaken. My daughter doesnât have a godfather.â
Jakeâs anxiety flared. âWhy canât I be her godfather? Youâre being ridiculous.â
Kallie shot back, âRidiculous? You didnât even bother to ask if she wants you as a godfather!â
Sophie shook her head vigorously. âI donât want a godfather. I have my real dad. My mommy says heâs a really nice guy. Youâre nice and all, but youâre not my dad. He doesnât wear a mask like you.â
Jake felt awful. He didnât know how to respond, so he just gave a sad laugh. âYouâre absolutely right. I donât deserve to be her godfather. I shouldnât have evenââ
Kallieâs eyes flashed, and she quickly changed the subject. âGet her to the hospital, now.â
Once Sophieâs bruises were taken care of, Kallie wanted Sophie to rest for some time instead of going to the kindergarten. Sophie was a bright kid with a sharp memory. Even if she missed a few months of kindergarten, sheâd catch up in no time.
Kallie had sent Sophie to kindergarten in a bid for her to make friends and be around other kids, but she had never seen this coming.
Kallie was ready to take over Jakeâs company; she hadnât forgotten their bet.
But just as Kallie was about to walk away, Jake stopped her. He coughed, reached out, and took Kallieâs hand. âLook, I didnât mean to set you up. I just⦠I needed a reason to see you. And if you couldnât make it, well⦠then youâd owe me one. Another chance to see you.â
Kallie nodded slowly, her expression carefully neutral. âSo, letâs get this straight. How many favors am I in for? Iâm not one to be in anyoneâs debt.â
gαâηÏνððsï¹cðm has it all Jakeâs composure faltered. âNo! I didnât mean it that wayâyou donât owe me anything.â
âOh, really?â Kallie drawled, an eyebrow arched suggestively.
