Chapter 676
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Clayton said, âApologies, Kallie. Elma has been severely ill. We had to consult a specialist. Plus, Iâve been swamped and only heard you were looking for me about two weeks ago.â
Kallieâs smile carried a sharp edge of sarcasm. âPerhaps you should consider changing your staff. They seem rather ineffective at keeping you informed.â
Claytonâs smile didnât waver. âYou have a point. It might be time for some changes.â
Not wanting to beat around the bush, Kallieâs tone turned icy. âTell me, Clayton, why choose to visit the doctor just when I get out of the hospital and decide to come see you? You ignored all my messages. What are you trying to say?â
Kallie was strikingly beautiful, but her usual warmth and gentleness were gone, replaced by a chilling, steely gaze.
Claytonâs tone was playful. âIt seems like you were in a rush to see me. So, what is it? Do you miss me, or is something else on your mind?â
It wasnât the time for jokes. Claytonâs playful demeanor only fueled Kallieâs anger.
Even Jake cast Clayton a few disapproving glances.

Claytonâs smile quickly vanished, replaced by a heavy sigh. Regret clouded his gaze as he met her eyes. âI came to tell you the truth about that. I have no clue where Chloe is. You should ask Jake why heâs here with me.â
A tremor ran through Kallieâs heart. She wasnât sure how to face Jake, especially since he had been silent from the moment she arrived. He hadnât even glanced her way. It seemed like he didnât remember her. Or, even worse, perhaps he just didnât want to acknowledge her.
Steeling herself, Kallie turned her attention to Jake. âMr. Reeves, can you explain why youâre here?â
Jake met her tearful gaze, a heavy weight pressing down on his chest. However, he remembered the conversation he had with Clayton before they arrived. He forced himself to say, âIâm sorry. I have no idea about the Chloe youâre talking about. I accompanied Mr. Morgan here because his sister, Cara, is my wife.â
âWife?â The word hit Kallie like a thunderclap, rattling through her mind. She shot to her feet, her voice rising uncontrollably. Her eyes, already brimming with tears, now blazed with disbelief. âYouâre married to her? But donât you rememberâ¦?â
Jake cut her off before she could finish, his tone steady but cold. âCalm down. I remember our past. But thatâs all it is, the past. We didnât end up together, and we never got married. Itâs been five years, and life goes on. Itâs only natural for me to marry someone else.â
Kallieâs mind buzzed with disbelief, but Jakeâs words rang crystal clear in her ears. Each syllable felt like a hammer, relentlessly pounding on her.
Kallie clenched her fists so tightly that her nails dug into her palms, hoping the pain would keep her grounded. But no amount of pain could dull the ache in her heart. She lowered her head, and the tears that had welled in her eyes finally spilled over, falling to the floor. She failed to notice both men felt the weight of her sorrow.
Jake couldnât explain why he felt such pity for her. Clayton mentioned she was Sarah. He had heard about his past with Sarah from others. They claimed they had parted on bad terms, swearing never to cross each otherâs paths again. Back then, she had annoyed him to no end.
Yet, now facing her, Jake felt no annoyance at all. Was it his amnesia clouding his feelings? They said he hated her guts, but now, inexplicably, he felt sorry for her.
