Chapter 690
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape
Kallieâs hands clenched into fists. âI havenât done anything wrong,â she retorted. âWhy should I leave? This is my friendâs engagement party.â
Kallie let out a humorless laugh, her eyes locked on Cara. âYou keep telling me to leave. I have to ask, whoâs the one clinging to the past? Or maybe you donât trust your husband. Perhaps you think heâll cheat on you, and youâre just trying to bluff and threaten me.â
Kallieâs words struck a nerve. Cara flushed, anger bubbling up in her chest. âYouâre talking nonsense!â she shrieked.
Kallie stood tall and smirked. âCut the crap. You know damn well Iâm not talking nonsense. Iâm just being upfront. Jakeâs with you now, so Iâm not going to dwell on my history with him.â
Cara clenched her jaw, her eyes burning with resentment. âOh really? If youâre so honest, then you should wish Jake and me a long and happy marriage. Just like you did for Miss Simpson and her fiancé earlier. Go on, wish us well.â
The smile slowly faded from Kallieâs face. Reasoning with someone so malicious was futile. Cara didnât care about making a scene. She just wanted to twist the knife.
Kallie was puzzled. She hadnât contacted Jake or tried to find out anything about him since learning the truth from Clayton. After everything sheâd been through, she wasnât about to get entangled in someone elseâs relationship. Jake had moved onâso why should she bother him? Caraâs animosity seemed to come out of nowhere.
Kallieâs silence emboldened Cara. Sensing a weakness, Cara pressed on.
âWhy wonât you wish us well?â Cara taunted. âIs it because you still have feelings for my husband? Kallie, I never took you for this kind of person. My brother once saved your life. We could ask for your life in return, and it wouldnât be out of line.â
Caraâs voice rose, her emotions escalating. She grabbed Kallieâs hand and pressed it against her stomach, her eyes filled with hatred. âDonât forget I lost my baby because my brother chose to save you and inadvertently ignored me. You might have forgotten, but I havenât.â
Kallie felt a wave of nausea. If she had to do Cara this huge favor, she wouldâve rather died at sea back then.
With no choice, Kallie, pale-faced and weak, muttered the congratulatory words. âI wish you both a happy marriage that lasts forever.â
Each word felt like a stab to Kallieâs heart.
Cara, satisfied, finally smiled.
Kallie felt defeated. âAre you happy now?â she asked.
Cara rolled her eyes. âOf course not! I still remember you and Jake had two kids. Your kids arenât pleased to see me with Jake, right? I will only be content with your kidsâ blessings.â
Kallieâs breathing quickened, her gaze growing colder. âCara, donât push me too far,â she warned. Her children were off-limits. Cara was playing with fire.
Yet, Cara didnât care. âSo what if youâre mad? You owe me, and you have to do this. Bring your kids here now. Donât make me send my men after them. Theyâre a rough bunch. If they accidentally hurt your kids, youâll be devastated.â
Kallie couldnât take it anymore and slapped Cara hard across the face.
It wasnât a particularly hard slap, but Cara acted as if sheâd been pushed, stumbling backward toward the champagne tower. Everyone could see that Cara was being dramatic.
The champagne tower shattered with a deafening crash, sending a shower of broken glass cascading over Cara.
