Chapter 720
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape
Before Jake could elaborate, Claytonâs pupils contracted with panic, his voice sharp as he interjected, âIâm aware. Iâve been thinking about what youâve said. Itâs just hard for me to put on an act with you to fool Cara.â
Jake held his tongue, allowing Clayton a moment to process the gravity of the situation. After all, Clayton was Caraâs elder brother.
Jakeâs hands were tied. He had to put on a charade with Clayton to escape from Caraâs control. Despite knowing the Reeves Group was once his domain, it now belonged to a woman he had previously despised, according to Claytonâs claim. The extent of its transformation and its trustworthiness remained a mystery to him.
Even with his memory lost, Jake remained vigilant, his instincts sharp. He wouldnât make a move until he had the whole situation under his control.
Thankfully, Clayton hadnât betrayed Jakeâs trust and divulged anything to Cara.
A sigh escaped Jakeâs lips as he studied Claytonâs conflicted expression. Jake stated firmly, âThe decision lies with you. Regardless, Iâm leaving with Elma. Staying here offers no assurance of her safety. If Cara takes further action, weâll be left with nothing but belated regret.â
A silent battle raged within Claytonâs eyes. After a prolonged silence, he finally nodded resolutely. âI understand. I wonât regret our plans.â
Their conversation concluded, and Jake turned away, his face once again an impassive mask. He managed his demeanor well, ensuring his interaction with Clayton did not arouse Caraâs suspicion.
Cara, meanwhile, was deep in thought, her mind buzzing with her future life with Jake. She gave Jake a flirty look. âJake, why donât you stay tonight?â she purred.
Jakeâs eyes changed slightly, but his face remained impassive. âLetâs wait until weâre married, alright?â
Cara wanted to push it, but she didnât want to upset Jake, so she simply nodded. âOkay, I get it. Itâs just your hesitation makes me wonder if youâre really serious about me.â Her words carried a hint of probing.
Jake pursed his lips together and pulled out a small box. He looked at Cara with what seemed like deep affection. âI got you something special. I hope you like it.â
Cara was thrilled. âWhat is it?â she asked excitedly.
Cara opened the box and gasped. Inside, a diamond ring sparkled under the lights.
Cara covered her mouth, her eyes welling up.
âDo you like it?â Jake asked. âOn our wedding day, Iâll give you an even more beautiful one and put it on your finger myself.â Cara was completely entranced, holding the ring box like it held the crown jewels. Nothing else mattered anymore. She nodded at Jake. âOkay. Iâll wait for you to marry me,â she said, her voice filled with longing.
Jake reached out and gave Cara a light pat on the head. Cara was beaming, practically floating out of the room with her ring. But as soon as she was gone, Jake pulled out a handkerchief and thoroughly wiped the spot where he had touched her. He frowned in disgust, his face a mask of impatience and disdain. Clearly, he wasnât as smitten as he had pretended to be.
Jake was just about to slip out when Keely spotted him.
âSir?â Keely asked, hurrying over to Jake. âWhere are you going?â
Jake glared at Keely. âDo I need to report my every move to you?â
