Chapter 752
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Sophie knew she had to step in and try to soothe Elmaâs hurt feelings. âElma, donât let him get to you. Calvinâs usually a good kid. Heâs just worried sick about our mom right now.â
Elma wrenched her hand from Sophieâs grasp and bolted from the room, tears streaming down her face.
Kallie felt a wave of discomfort wash over her. She turned her back on Calvin, not wanting to see him right now.
Tears welled up in Calvinâs eyes, a rare sight for the usually stoic boy. Frustration and guilt mingled within him. âMomâ¦â he choked out, moving to her bedside, his head hung low. âI canât stand seeing you like this, in so much pain. I hate seeing you sad. Please donât be angry with me. I promise I wonât say those things again.â
Kallie sighed, her voice heavy with worry. âIf something happens to me, itâll just be the three of you left. How can I be at peace knowing you treat each other this way?â
Sophieâs brow furrowed with worry. âMom, donât talk like that,â she said, her voice filled with concern. âIâll take you to the hospital right now.â
Kallie slowly shook her head, a wave of exhaustion washing over her. Her body felt heavy, her mind sluggish. She was too tired to even lift a finger, let alone deal with a hospital visit. All she craved was the soft embrace of sleep.
After running off, Elma didnât waste any time. She found a quiet spot, ensuring no one was around, and dialed Clayton.
Clayton was surprised when he saw Elmaâs name pop up on his phone. âElma? Whatâs going on? Did something happen?â
âClaytonâ¦â Elma sniffled, feeling a little choked up. But she didnât forget why she called and lowered her voice. âMy momâs feeling unwell. She wonât go to the hospital, and I donât know what to do. Can you come over?â
Clayton froze for a second, his heart racing. âKallie is sick? And she refused to go to the hospital? Why would she do that? Iâll be there as soon as I can.â
As Clayton hurriedly gathered his things, a thought struck him. âElma, does that mean youâre finally accepting Kallie as your mom?â
Elmaâs voice dropped to a whisper, a little embarrassed. âYeah, sheâs my mom. But letâs not talk about it right now.â
Meanwhile, Sophie had the maid try cold compresses to bring down Kallieâs fever, but nothing seemed to work.
At the hospital, Kallieâs condition was worse than theyâd thought. She had a viral infection that had spread to her lungs.
As the nurse adjusted Kallieâs medication, she couldnât help but comment, âYou shouldâve come in sooner if you werenât feeling well. Putting it off just makes it worse. And you arenât much of a good boyfriend. Didnât you know your girlfriend was this sick?â
Clayton opened his mouth to explain, but Kallie beat him to it. âHeâs not my boyfriend. Heâs my friend.â Claytonâs smile vanished, and his expression dimmed.
The nurse was flustered and awkwardly adjusted her glasses. âOh, sorry. He just seemed so concerned when rushing you in.â
Kallie shook her head, offering a small smile to show there were no hard feelings.
Clayton cleared his throat, eager to change the subject. âWill she need to be admitted? Make sure she gets the best treatment available. Moneyâs not a concern. I donât want her suffering any long-term effects.â The nurse nodded and left the room.
