Chapter 753
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Kallie sighed. âIâve been so caught up with Elma and Jake that I didnât realize how bad Iâd gotten. I shouldâve been paying attention.â
Claytonâs expression shifted, but he stayed quiet. Kallie noticed the change and eyed him suspiciously. âAre you hiding something from me?â
Clayton quickly shook his head. âNo. Youâre just overthinking.â
Kallie grabbed his wrist, her tone serious. âYouâre hiding something. Clayton, if you keep lying to me, we canât even be friends.â
Clayton let out a long breath. âKallie, right now, you need to focus on getting better. Iâll tell you everything once youâre better.â
But Kallie wasnât having it. She moved to pull the IV from her arm.
Startled, Clayton grabbed her hand. âDonât! Donât do that.â
Her tone was cold and resolute. âIâll find out myself if you wonât tell me. I promised Iâd find Jake, even if itâs only his corpse.â
Clayton lowered his gaze as mixed feelings surged inside him. âAre you sure you want to hear this?â
A sinking feeling washed over Kallie, but she nodded. âTell me.â
âThe police found something.â He paused, pain flickering in his eyes. âThey found Caraâs body near a river a few miles from Burmoos.â
Kallieâs heart pounded in her chest. âAnd Jake? What about him?â
Clayton shook his head. âThey still havenât found his body yet. Maybe the river carried him somewhere else.â Kallieâs expression hardened. âDo you mean âhis bodyâ? He could still be alive.â
Clayton looked at her, his voice soft but firm. âKallie, you need to accept it. Cara wasnât harmed when she fell into the river, but she is already gone. Jake was injured then. How could he haveâ¦â
âShut up!â Kallieâs voice cracked, her composure shattering.
Kallieâs breathing was heavy, her eyes swollen and red, her whole demeanor one of deep disturbance.
Clayton kept quiet, giving her time to find her composure. With several deep breaths steadying her, Kallie declared, âJust continue to search for Jake. I refuse to believe heâs dead until I see proof with my own eyes.â
Kallie shut her eyes, exhaustion etched on her face. âI need to be alone. Please, just go.â
Clayton paused, giving her a final lingering look, before reluctantly walking away.
Outside, Claytonâs assistant was waiting. He looked visibly upset on Claytonâs behalf as Clayton emerged, clearly disheartened. âWhy does Miss Nixon have to be like this? She has no idea how hard youâve been working to find Jake and Cara. Youâve barely slept. Doesnât she notice how much weight youâve lost?â
Clayton shot his assistant a stern look. âIâm exhausted. Isnât she exhausted as well? Donât make comments like that again. Iâm doing this because I choose to.â
The assistant said softly, âShe doesnât even care about you, Mr. Morgan. Why do you care so much for her when others value you more?â
