Chapter 848
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

He opened the door to find the two sisters standing there.
Lacey quickly regained her composure, her face reflecting no emotion.
Jake frowned at the sight of them.
âWere you listening to my conversation?â he asked, his voice laden with suspicion.
Jeanette shook her head vigorously.
âNo, we just got here,â she replied.
Relieved by her response, Jake dropped the subject.
He stared at her, an idea crossing his mind.
He bent down so he could look into her eyes.
âI thought you were at the party with your sister,â he said.
âWhy didnât I see you?â
Jake was simply curious, but his question filled the sisters with dread.
Before Lacey could answer, Jeanette began to tremble.
âI didnât go anywhere,â she stammered.
Jeanette was so worried about getting in trouble that she felt tears building up in her eyes.
Jake was surprised.
He wasnât sure what to think and felt a spark of suspicion.
Jeanetteâs reaction was a clear indication of her guilt.
âJeanette,â Lacey called quickly, placing Jeanette behind her back protectively.
âIf youâre feeling a little under the weather, just go get some rest.â
After Jeanette left, Lacey turned around, noticing the suspicious look in Jakeâs eyes.
Clearing her throat, Lacey spoke, her voice tinged with discomfort.
âItâs not that I didnât want to tell you.
Jeanetteâs at that stage where she wants to prove herself.
Some kids picked on her at the party.
I only found out after the party was over.â He paused, hesitating.
âShe doesnât want to talk about it, and you should understand that. Sheâs always been sensible, even when she was a child.â
âShe was harassed?â Jakeâs suspicion quickly turned to concern, his voice strained.
âBy who?â he asked, annoyed.
Lacey smiled bitterly.
âI donât know exactly.
It was probably a group of rich, powerful kids.
Thereâs nothing we can do about it.
Jeanette and I just got here, and weâre still trying to settle in.
Besides, your identity is special too, so we might as well leave it at that.â
Regret washed over Jake as he thought about how heâd doubted Jeanette and Lacey earlier.
âIâm sorry,â he muttered.
Lacey shook her head softly.
âItâs okay. Itâs no big deal.â
