Chapter 900
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape
âThink what you like,â Kallie said dismissively. She hadnât come here to offer fashion advice. Kallie retrieved the amulets from her purse and held them out in front of Lacey. âPerhaps you can explain the meaning of these items,â she said, her voice devoid of warmth.
Laceyâs eyes fell upon the amulets, but instead of appearing apprehensive, she let out a laugh. âIt means nothing. I was simply wishing your daughter good luck,â she replied casually.
Kallie crossed her arms, Laceyâs response not surprising her in the least. She stated, her voice laced with menace, âLet me be frank, this entire shop is surrounded by my men.â
âIf you donât tell me the truth, you wonât be leaving here today. I know you must have controlled Jake in some way. I donât know how you found him or what youâve done to control him, but Iâll pay any price to get him back. Name your terms. Iâll give you whatever you want. Just return Jake to me unharmed.â
Kallie gritted her teeth, her words full of threat.
Lacey burst into laughter, completely unfazed by Kallieâs threats. âMy, my, you have quite the imagination. Who said Iâm holding Jake prisoner or controlling him? Perhaps heâs with me because he wants to be. Perhaps he has no desire to see you or return to you,â she taunted.
âImpossible,â Kallie retorted instinctively. Then, a realization dawned on Kallie. Her eyes reddened, and a tremor ran through her body. âJake⦠Heâs alive, isnât he?â she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
Lacey smirked, relishing Kallieâs distress. âStop pretending, Kallie. Everyone knows youâd be happy if something terrible happened to him. In fact, you probably wish he were dead.â
âStop spewing nonsense!â Kallie snapped, stepping forward and grabbing Laceyâs arm. âTell me where he is! Let him go! Ensure his safety, and Iâll give you anything you desire.â
âFine,â Lacey sneered. âThen hand over the Reeves Group.â
Kallie scoffed. âYouâve got to be kidding, right?â
Kallie felt the Reeves Group wasnât really hers to give. It belonged to Jake. She planned to return it to him as soon as he came back. If Lacey had asked for the Nixon Group or anything else for that matter, Kallie would have agreed without hesitation.
âPick something else!â Kallie growled through clenched teeth.
Laceyâs laughter was sharp and mocking. âI told you what I want, and youâre not willing to give it up. After all, you went to a lot of trouble to get your hands on the Reeves Group, didnât you?â
Kallieâs patience snapped. She gave Lacey a withering look. âWhere the hell did you get that idea? Youâve got quite the imagination, donât you?â
Lacey leaned in, her voice a low hiss in Kallieâs ear. âFine. I donât want your money, your power, or your fame. Give me your three kids, and Iâll give Jake back.â
Laceyâs words crossed Kallieâs line. Kallieâs eyes narrowed, her vision blurring with rage. âDream on!â she spat.
Lacey smirked, her eyes gleaming with malice. âArenât you tough on your kids? Why not let me take care of them? Theyâd be much better off with me,â she taunted.
Kallie saw red. She raised her hand to strike Lacey. Just then, a deep voice cut through the tension.
âStop it.â
Kallie froze, her hand hovering in midair. Her entire body went rigid. Her heart hammered in her chest. She lowered her hand, releasing Laceyâs arm.
Slowly, she turned around, her eyes wide with disbelief. The man standing in front of her was Jake, the man who had haunted her dreams for years. Even after all this time, Jake looked almost the same. He was still incredibly handsome with an aloof demeanor. But now, he seemed more mature. Years of power and authority radiated from him. Just one look into his dark eyes was enough to make anyone nervous.
