Chapter 911
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

âWhereâs Jake?â she demanded. âI need to see him right now.â
Leo glanced at Jake, who was nursing a drink. He decided not to tell Lacey the truth.
âMr. Reeves is busy with some important matters. Since youâre no longer in danger, please donât disturb him,â he said evasively.
Laceyâs blood boiled. âLeo, what do you mean Iâm disturbing Mr. Reeves? Iâm practically his most trusted confidante!â she retorted, her voice laced with indignation.
Leoâs brow furrowed in displeasure. From the moment heâd started working for Jake, he had harbored a distinct dislike for Lacey as he found her demeanor to be condescending and arrogant. Plus, he could see right through her facade of superiority. More importantly, Jake hadnât treated Lacey differently, always maintaining a polite demeanor.
Leo knew Jake had softened his demeanor around Lacey only because of the life-saving favor. However, Lacey had misinterpreted Jakeâs gratitude as romantic interest and genuinely believed she held a special place in his affections.
Right now, Leo could tell Jake was clearly in a foul mood and wasnât in the mood to entertain visitors. Laceyâs shrill tone caused Leoâs expression to harden.
âI said Mr. Reeves doesnât want to be disturbed,â he stated firmly. âMiss Payne, if you continue to cause a scene, youâll only anger Mr. Reeves.â
Lacey was well aware of Jakeâs temperament. Under normal circumstances, she wouldnât have persisted, but today was different. She desperately needed reassurance, a confirmation that she held some significance in Jakeâs life. Suppressing her frustration, Lacey forced a note of panic into her voice.
âI wouldnât insist if it wasnât important. Iâm facing a difficult situation, and itâs urgent. I need to see Jake immediately,â she pleaded.
Leo massaged his temples, feeling a surge of exasperation.
âMiss Payne, Mr. Reeves had instructed me to handle any issues you might encounter. Why donât you explain the situation to me? Mr. Reeves is preoccupied with other matters.â
Lacey bit back a curse, her jaw clenching in frustration.
âLeo, if you donât let me see Jake, Iâll hurt myself. You know Iâll do it.â
Leo winced. Lacey had never acted like this before. Maybe she really did have something important to tell Jake.
Just then, Jake spotted Leo and beckoned him over.
âCome here.â
Leo approached, noticing Jakeâs flushed cheeks and red-rimmed eyes.
âMr. Reeves, youâve had quite a bit to drink already. Maybe you should slow down,â Leo said, his voice laced with concern.
Jakeâs head was swimming, but he was still clear-headed enough to ask, âWhat does Lacey want?â
Leo hesitated.
âIâm not sure, butâ¦â
Jake rubbed his temples, trying to ease the pounding in his head.
âIâm feeling better now. If itâs important, let her come over. Lacey doesnât usually act like this. Maybe somethingâs wrong.â
Leo nodded and called Lacey back.
When Leo returned to Jakeâs side, his expression was complex.
