Chapter 913
Unspoken Hearts: My Neglected Mute Wife’s Escape

Lacey fought to keep her emotions in check and forced a smile, though her face had paled. She hastily shifted the conversation.
âMr. Reeves, I wanted to see you because thereâs something important I need to tell you. Today, Codyâs people found me and took me to see him.â
Lacey wasnât trying to keep this from Jake. If he ever wanted to, he could easily learn of her whereabouts, though he had never done so. Still, she held onto a faint hope that he might care, even a little.
Jakeâs only response was a nonchalant âHmm.â
Laceyâs hands balled into fists. That was it? That was all he had to say? How could he be so indifferent?
Lacey swallowed her frustration and asked, âMr. Reeves, arenât you concerned that Cody might do something to me?â
Jake shot her a look. âHe wonât do anything to you. He doesnât dare. Besides, whatever he does to you doesnât hold sway over me.â
Laceyâs heart sank as she recalled Codyâs threats. Sadness weighed on her. If it were Kallie in her place, she knew Jake would care.
Taking a deep breath, Lacey continued, âYouâre right. Cody didnât harm me. He just wants me to come back to him and offer medical treatment. I thought it was an important matter. After all, Cody isnât someone to cross these days. I worried he might retaliate if I refused. Thatâs why I came to talk to you.â
Once again, Jakeâs response was a simple, flat, âHmm.â He figured it was only natural for Lacey to feel flustered under the circumstances.
Lacey took a moment and then added, âRegarding this, I wanted to ask your opinion, Mr. Reeves. If you donât want me toâ¦â
galnoνâ¯ls.com is your update source Jake interrupted. âDonât concern yourself with me. You worked for him before, didnât you? If the payâs worthwhile, I wonât stand in your way. But if you go, I wonât let you handle any confidential matters. You should give it some thought.â
Lacey grasped the implications of Jakeâs words, her face paling slightly.
She wanted to respond, but a sense of helplessness weighed her down. Jake closed his eyes, his voice weary. âI need some rest. If thereâs nothing else, please leave.â
Shaking her head, Lacey replied, âI wonât go to Cody. I made my choice to be with you back then, and Iâm not going to betray that decision. Others might let you down, but I wonât.â
Lacey hoped her loyalty would mean something to him. But Jake merely gave a slight nod. It was as though her loyalty meant nothing to him.
Laceyâs chest tightened, her sorrow almost overwhelming. She bit her lip, fighting back the tears that threatened to escape. Moving with purpose, she poured herself a drink and then one for Jake.
âMr. Reeves,â she began, forcing a smile. âIâm grateful for all youâve done for me over the years. Once Jeanette returns, Iâll take her home. I wonât trouble you anymore.â
Hearing this, Jake appeared genuinely relieved. Laceyâs decision to leave spared him from any further complications. He nodded, lifting his glass as he addressed Leo, âIf Miss Payne is leaving, see that she receives some money. Sheâs put in hard work all these years.â
Leo agreed without hesitation. Jake took a sip from his glass, and a wave of discomfort washed through him. Gesturing toward the door, he signaled for both Leo and Lacey to leave.
Lacey, however, lingered. âIâll stay a bit longer. If you start feeling unwell from drinking, I can get you something to help.â
