Mrs. Kirk hadn’t intended to be so absolute in her words.

But seeing the attitude of the Lopez family, and especially Mrs. Lopez’s attitude, she knew it would be better to keep a distance from the Lopezes in the future.

Helping them this time resulted in resentment rather than gratitude.
