Be With Me: Chapter 48
Be With Me: A Forbidden Love Mafia Romance (House of Ferraro Book 1)
Adrenaline still pumped through my veins by the time I returned to Cosimoâs. Iâd gotten more out of Jenny before I leftâtwo guards were stationed with Mia. Taking them out wouldnât be hard, but if Morales had backup, there could be trouble. I didnât want to risk firing a gun with Mia nearby, which meant I needed my own manpower.
I wasnât taking any chances. All that mattered now was getting her outâfast and clean. If something had happened to her, if sheâd been hurt in any way, Morales was a fucking dead man.
I found Cos pacing in his office. He was visibly agitated, and he wasnât alone. Mother sat on the sofa, dressed head to toe in black, and Alessio stood nearby, his fresh cast slung over his chest.
âRomolo,â Cosimo snapped, âyou missed quite a show. Mom arrived here just as I got a call from our lawyer. Turns out, thereâs a page missing from Dadâs will.â He stopped in front of her. âShe was about to explain how that happened.â
The words Iâd planned to sayâI donât have time for thisâfroze on my tongue.
What?
This morning, just before sunrise, Cosimo and I had gone out to the backyard to get some air. Weâd sat at the picnic table under the tree and ate cold leftover pizza one of the capos had ordered. When heâd brought up that summer again and asked what happened, Iâd finally told him.
It shouldâve been the most uncomfortable conversation of my lifeâand in some ways, it was. But it was also cathartic.
Iâd talked. Cos had listened. When Iâd finished, he cleared his throat and said he wished Iâd come to him back then.
Iâd told him there was no changing the past. But from now on, I wasnât following Motherâs orders.
Heâd nodded. âGood,â heâd said. âBecause Iâm the don now and the only person you answer to is me.â
Motherâs gaze flicked to me and then back to him. The lamplight made her silver hair glimmer in a disconcerting way. âI donât know what happened.â
Cosimo crossed his arms. âDonât know? The safe where the will was kept has only three keysâone with Father, one with the lawyer, and one with you. Thereâs a record of you accessing the safe yesterday. You didnât even bother hiding your tracks.â
Mother didnât flinch under Cosimoâs glare. âI was there to get jewelry for the funeral. I didnât touch the will.â
Cosimo scoffed. âThe missing page specifies who gets control of the family. What are you playing at?â
âIâm not playing at anything. But without that page, succession has to be a discussion.â
I let out a sharp breath. The fucking audacity of this woman. This was a new low. Did she really think this blatant attempt at a power grab would work?
âThatâs insane,â Alessio said. âEveryone knows Dad intended Cosimo to be the don. The capos are ready to follow him.â
âMaybe your father changed his mind,â Mother said, smoothing her palms over her mourning dress. âHe was disappointed with Cosimoâs immaturity regarding his upcoming marriage. A person ready to lead this family wouldnât behave like that.â
âThatâs bullshit, and you know it.â I stepped closer to Cos, who looked like he was barely restraining himself from snapping her neck. âDad never expressed any doubts about who should succeed him.â
âMaybe not to you,â Mother countered. âBut he did privately to me. And I agree with him. Cosimo still has growing up to do.â
I shook my head. It was all bullshit. Dad may have given her an unusual amount of power, but heâd groomed Cosimo to take over as don from basically the day he was born. âNone of us have time for this pointless discussion. We all know Cosimo is the don. Did you really think Alessio or I would take your side?â I turned to Cos. âIâve got a lead on Mia. I have toâ ââ
âMia?â Mother interjected.
âYes, Mother. Mia.â Cos and Alessio already knew the abridged version of our storyâI told them before I ran out to search for Mia earlier.
Mother was about to get an even shorter summary. âSheâs mine. Off-limits. Forever.â
Her gaze narrowed. There was a time when that look from her would have made me feel two feet tall, but incredibly, now it barely registered.
âAh,â she said. âThat explains your utter incompetence when it came to her. I didnât expect Moralesâs daughter would be smart enough to outmaneuver you. But maybe youâre not as smart as I believed.â
âThanks for the opinion no one asked for,â I said. âYou can think whatever you want about me, but if you so much as touch a hair on Miaâs head, Iâll rip you apart with my bare hands and feed you to the fucking dogs.â
Her face paled. She wasnât used to anyone standing up to her, and it showed. Satisfaction unfurled inside me at how quickly things were changing. Funny how sometimes change seems impossible, but really, all it takes is a single leap of faith.
âWeâre a family, Romolo,â she said. âOr did you forget? With your father gone, all we have is each other.â
âSpare me,â I snarled. âIt was never about our family. Not for you. Family doesnât fucking do the things youâve done to us.â
âI raised you,â she bit out.
âNo. You used me. I was your tool. But Iâm done being useful to you. My loyaltyâs with Cosimo. The fucking leader of this family. And if youâre trying to undermine him, then youâre not family anymore.â
Deep lines marred her forehead. The fact that she was losing was finally hitting her. âCosimo doesnât have what it takes. I do. Iâve led alongside your father for almost thirty years.â Motherâs eyes flicked between us before she dropped her final card. âHereâs the hard truth. None of you have any idea what youâre up against. Youâve tried to figure out why the Santoro family is targeting us, and youâve found nothing. That historyâs been erased. Iâm the only one who knows the full story.â
Cosimo walked around his desk and sat down. âWeâll figure it out.â
âYou wonât.â Her voice rang out. âThe Santoro family killed Gino, and this is only the beginning. I know them. I know I can lead us past this threat. But without me, youâve already lost.â
I exchanged a glance with my brothers. We were all thinking the same thing.
âWeâll take our chances, Mother,â Cosimo said, cold as ice. âGet out. I donât want to see you again.â
Mother stared at him, fury twisting her face. âYouâre making a big mistake.â She grabbed her purse from the coffee table and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
âFucking finally,â I muttered. I had to get out of here. âMorales is keeping Mia locked up in his apartment. Iâm taking a few guys and getting her out.â
Cosimo nodded. âTake who you need.â
It didnât take long to gather the men. We got into three cars and hit the road.
Within an hour, Mia would be with me. And if Morales thought he could stand in my way, he was about to learn just how far Iâd go to protect whatâs mine.
