“Happy birthday sweetheart. My mom Isabel said to me with a smile on her face before placing a kiss on my cheek.

“Thanks, mom,” I said gratefully.

“How does it feel to be seventeen?” She asked.

“It’s great. I don’t know why but I’m honestly happy.” I said to my mom but deep down within me I knew why I was happy.

When Sean and I had conversed the other day in class, he told me if I didn’t tell him what I wanted before my birthday then he was going to grant any wish of mine and I’d have to grant his wish too.

At first, I was comfortable with the idea but then I thought about it, maybe I’d use that as an opportunity to confess my love

to him.

“Here is a little gift from me to you. Thanks so much for coming into my life Emma. Thanks so much for lighting my world and making me happy. Thanks for giving me hope and I love you with all my heart.” My mom said to me.

I recalled her telling Ethan and me the story of when she found out she had us.

She was happy. She felt her world change and she saw hope. She almost named me Hope.

Thanks, Mum,” I said and she placed a kiss on her forehead before leaving my room.

I slept off with a smile on my face looking forward to the day. I woke up the next day to see I had received some birthday

wishes text.

Unlike Ethan, I don’t usually receive lots of birthday wishes because I barely had friends but I didn’t care about that. The one I had and cared about me wished me well. Aunt Adeline, my mom’s best friend and also my godmother sent a long text wishing me a happy birthday. Lola wished me too and some of my family members.

“Happy birthday princess.” My dad said and I screamed in surprise.

He has been always for a month and I didn’t expect him to come because mom said he wouldn’t make it but he did. I ran towards him and hugged him.

“Daddy!” I screamed, wrapping my arms around him.

“Oh, princess. I’ve missed you so much. Happy birthday. How have you been?” He asked as he pulled back from the hug.

“Now that you are here Dad, all is fine, I was sad when Mom said you wouldn’t make it but now that you are here, I’m super excited. I’ve missed you so much!” I confessed.

“I’ve missed you too and you should have known I wouldn’t miss you and your brother’s birthday in the world. I cannot even if I have a broken leg,” he chuckled, patting my cheek and I grinned.

“Where’s your brother? I hope he has been taking care of you in my absence or I’d make sure to scold him.” He asked to

tease.

Just then Ethan walked down the stairs.

“Hello young man,” my dad said to Ethan.

I didn’t fail to notice the smile that formed on Ethan’s face when he saw our dad.

“Dad! Mom said you wouldn’t make it,” he said.

“So how have you been taking care of your sister in my absence? He asked.

“I’ve been doing all I can but she doesn’t listen and thinks I’m her enemy,” he replied and I rolled my eyes at her.

“Says the boy who goes around threatening people from coming to speak to me. Don’t act dumb and let’s not forget that you walk with the girls that threatened female students from speaking to me,” I chastise.

“Wait, Wait. Wait. What’s going on?” My dad asked,

“Ask Ethan to explain why he doesn’t want me to be happy and why he wants to act like my dad suddenly! I mean even if wants to act that way, he’s doing a terrible job. He prevents boys from coming to speak to me,” I explained.

“I’m protecting you from teenage boys,” he said in his defense and I scoffed in disbelief.

“Oh please. You should be protecting yourself from teenage girls after all I’m not the one who is seen with different ones each day!” I retorted.

“What’s happening? Can the both of you calm down?” My dad spoke.

“Emma your brother is just doing what I told him to and that’s to make sure you don’t fall victim to those teenage boys but what is your sister saying about you, Ethan? Different girls? What’s happening?” He turned his attention to Ethan.

“She’s getting it wrong. It’s not my fault girls want me but I have nothing to do with them,” he lied and I rolled my eyes.

Maybe if I had caught him kissing and smooching some girls then I’d have believed it to be a misunderstanding.

“What has happened to the both of you? I’ve been gone for how long and there’s this much drama on the ground. I want to hear both sides of the story because we are going to mend all broken bonds today. Is your mom aware of this?” He asked.

“She doesn’t know. I haven’t said anything until now,” I replied.

“Emma what’s going on and what has Ethan done to you that you don’t like?” My dad asked.

Firstly, Ethan is bossy. He wants to control my life and in his defense, he’s trying to protect me. I don’t see it as protection but him wanting to tell me what to do when we are both the same age.”

“Secondly, he tells boys to stay away from me. I don’t have friends. Everyone in school avoids me. They speak to me today and avoid me like a plague the next day while Ethan on the other hand seems to have everyone around him begging to be his friend.”

“I found out he’s the one preventing me from having anybody speaking to me and the girls he is always with are the ones who threatened the female student to avoid me,” I explained.

“What? What are you even saying? I admit that I warmed boys to stay away from you but that’s because I’m protecting you. Trust me when I say I know them better,” he replied.

“Of course, you’d know them better after all you are all the same people,” I retorted.

“What about Darcy and Serena? Don’t you know that they’ve been threatening girls to avoid me hence the reason for my loneliness? And let’s not forget that you started avoiding me anytime you were with Sean. I don’t know what I did but it’s

other half. Of course, you are my priority. I only want the best for you. I never meant to hurt you and I’m sorry I didn’t see that it was hurting you.” He spoke softly, his voice showed evidence of remorse.

“Don’t apologize. It’s not needed. You did what you could do to ruin me and it’s done. Your apology won’t change anything.” I replied although I knew he was sincere I didn’t want to forgive yet.

“I’m sorry for how I’ve made you feel Em. I am and I wish I had known earlier. Alright. I won’t try to boss you around or try to tell you what to do anymore, is that alright?” He asked.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

He nodded his head. “I promise.”

“Wow. I’m proud of the both of you. I didn’t even have to say much and you’ve both gotten it out of your chest and made up. You are both grown already and I’m super proud to see this moment,” my dad complimented.

“Emma. I’m sorry about how you’ve been feeling and I’m sorry that I wasn’t seeing it,” my dad said to me.

“I didn’t know about drag and Serena. I’m sorry about that and will handle that,” Ethan spoke.

“You don’t have to do anything about it. Lola was the one who told me about it and she told me because she was tired of being bosset around. She wanted to be friends and that’s why she took that step and I’m glad she did. Others don’t want to make an effort so it’s not needed but what I want to know is why Darcy and Serena only want to make me angry. Why do they hurt me?” I said.

“I will handle that,” Ethan said.

“Now you can both hug so we can get prepared for your birthday, don’t you think?” My dad spoke.

Ethan and I hugged and I felt good that I let out what I had in my chest. My seventeenth birthday is looking good already and I cannot wait for the rest of it.

My phone beeped signaling that I had a message and I unlocked my phone to view the message. It was a message from Chase.

“Happy birthday Em. I’m proud to grow up with you and I’m glad to know you. Thanks for being born. I wish you t in life and cheers to many more memories. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes. My heart sk ipped fro short and sweet message left.

“Thank you so much,” I replied with a smile on my face. I honestly couldn’t wait for tonight. I couldn’t wait because I d of having my first kiss on my seventeenth birthday.

“You are welcome sweetheart and one more thing, what’s the color of your dress for tonight’s party?” He asked.

The skin between my brows creased. Why does he want to know the color of my dress? I thought to myself but I eventually

told him.

“It’s purple.” I texted.

“Purple? Alright. That’s nice. Happy birthday once again and we will see tonight.” He replied.

I couldn’t help but imagine the smile on his face when he sent that text. I fell on my bed, feeling happy and looking forward to tonight.

“Emma it will be great. Tonight will be your best night yet, I said to myself with a grin on my face.
