Mafia Kings: Adriano: Chapter 15
Mafia Kings: Adriano: Dark Mafia Romance Series #2
In the blink of an eye, my life had turned into a horror movie crossed with an action film.
My heart was beating three times as fast as possible, and I trembled from head to toe as the car sped down the narrow streets of old Florence.
âWhat the FUCK?!â Adriano roared.
âIs anyone shot?â Lars asked.
Iâd heard Adriano call out his name during the firefight. His calmness was a stark contrast with Adrianoâs rage.
There was a chorus of noâs from the other men.
Lars glanced at me in the rearview mirror. âSignorina â are you hurt?â
I shook my head mutely. Iâm not sure I could have spoken even if Iâd wanted to.
âWhat the fuck was THAT?!â Adriano bellowed.
âI think itâs pretty obvious, donât you?â Massimo said.
Iâd heard Adriano use his name several times, too.
His huge body was squeezed up against me on my left side, nearly crushing me against Adriano.
Suddenly Adriano turned towards me. âYou KNEW about this, didnât you?!â
I shook my head frantically, my eyes on the gun in his hand.
âThis was a set-up â and you were the fucking bait!â Adriano snarled in my face.
I was terrified beyond belief.
These men were mafiosos â I just knew they were going to kill me and dump my body in the woods.
âI swear to God, I didnât know â I just wanted to save my f-father!â I babbled as I burst into tears.
And just like that, Adriano calmed down.
He still looked like he wanted to kill someone â but at least he stopped shouting.
âAre you going to k-kill me?â I sobbed.
âNo,â he said in a gruff voice. âNot if you didnât have anything to do with it.â
âI d-didnât, I promise!â
âThen youâre safe. Massimo, call Dario â weâve got to let him know that the Agrellas might be coming for them.â
As Massimo pulled out his cell phone, Lars addressed Adriano in the rearview mirror. âYou knew something was going down in the hotel suite â but how?â
âIt was something she said,â Adriano replied, gesturing to me. âHer father owes money to the Agrellas, and they agreed to knock off three grand if she came here tonight. Nobody in their right mind would pay that â which meant she was expendable. So were the other girls.â
She was expendable.
My blood ran cold as soon as Adriano said it.
That meant that everyoneâ¦
Sergio â
Those people at the agency â
Theyâd all known they were sending me to my death.
I wanted to throw up.
âNiccolo?â Massimo suddenly said into his cell. âHold on â let me put you on speaker.â
He held the phone out so everyone could hear.
âIâm assuming this isnât good news,â a manâs voice spoke.
âNo, itâs not,â Adriano snapped. âIs Dario there?â
âYes,â a deeper voice said.
âIt was a set-up. The Agrellas tried to kill us.â
There was a pause⦠then the deep voice asked, âAre you alright?â
âWe lost Rolando and Gasparo. A couple of others might have been shot, but they all made it into the cars.â
âLars and Massimo?â
âWeâre fine,â Massimo said.
âYou should be ready in case they move on you,â Adriano said to the phone.
âAlready working on it,â Niccolo said.
âTell me exactly what happened,â Dario ordered.
Adriano summarized everything in 20 seconds. I was surprised to hear some of the details â like Adriano moving the table into position to use as a shield.
When Adriano finished, Dario said, âQuick thinking.â
Niccolo added, âNow get back here as soon as possible.â
âNo,â Adriano said.
There was a pause.
I could almost see the surprised faces of the two men on the other end of the line.
âEXCUSE me?â Niccolo said in both irritation and surprise.
âWe pulled someone out with us,â Adriano said. âA girl the Agrellas hired for the evening. I think she can shed some more light on this.â
âYes, well, we can question her just as effectively HERE. Now gâ â
âThe Agrellas are expecting us to retreat,â Adriano argued. âWe have a chance to hit them when their guard is down! If we run back to the estate â â
âThen no one else DIES.â
âAnd the Agrellas get away with their bullshit!â Adriano shouted.
âIf Rolando and Gasparo are dead, you have ten men at your immediate disposal. Fewer, if any others got wounded. Youâre going to take on the whole fucking Agrella family with ten men?â
âI have eight more at the safe house.â
âOh, MY mistake! Eighteen men â thatâs a whole fucking ARMY!â Niccolo said facetiously. Then he growled, âGet back here NOW.â
âIâm the capo of Florence. I canât go hiding behind big brother every time something goes wrong.â
âThis isnât a playground fight, you fool!â
âRetreating makes me look weak.â
âBetter than making you look like a corpse!â
Adriano got a resolute look on his face. âIf my don orders me back, Iâll come â but otherwise, it should be my call.â
There was a long pause before Dario finally spoke. âTalk to the girl and see what you can find out. But donât go attacking the main compound â thatâs suicide.â
âWhat about one of the Agrellasâ safe houses?â Adriano suggested. âDidnât their consigliere give us an address after the Turkâs men tried to kill Massimo and Valentino in Florence?â
âThatâs trueâ¦â
âWe could grab a couple of their men and squeeze them for information.â
I was pretty sure âsqueeze them for informationâ was a euphemism for torture, and I felt nauseated all over again.
âDo it,â Dario said.
When Niccolo spoke again, he sounded testy. âIâll text you the address.â
âWe need to do something about Rolando and Gasparoâs bodies,â Adriano said. âIf the Agrellas donât make them âdisappear,â that is.â
âIâll call our contacts in the police.â
âTry De Luca and Conti in Homicide,â Adriano suggested.
âI see somebody did his homework,â Niccolo sneered.
âI take my job as capo seriously.â
âWell, do us a favor and take it seriously enough that you donât get yourself â or anyone else â killed.â
Adriano looked pissed. âYour faith in me is overwhelming, Nic.â
âYeah, yeah. Call us when you decide what youâre going to do⦠CAPO.â
âAlright. Thanks, Dario.â
âBe safe, brother. That goes for all of you.â
âWe will.â
From the repeated use of âbrother,â I wondered if they were all related or if it was just the way they addressed each other.
Massimo ended the call and pocketed his phone.
âWe canât go to the Agrellaâs safe house like this,â Lars said. âThe car looks like Swiss cheese.â
âGet back to the safehouse so we can switch it out,â Adriano ordered. Then he looked at me. âIn the meantime, I want to hear what Bianca knows.â
Oh shitâ¦
I started trembling all over again. âI donât know anything, I swear!â
âYou may not know what you know. Start with your father â whatâs his role in all of this?â
As soon as he said your father, I immediately remembered the voicemail.
âWait â hold on,â I said as I reached into my leather dominatrix top.
âWhat the fuckâre you â oh,â Adriano said as I retrieved my phone.
âNice hiding place,â Massimo said humorously.
Adriano shot Massimo an irritated look â like he didnât want the giant looking at my boobs â then turned back to me. âWell?â
âI was listening to this right before the shooting started,â I said, then played them the voicemail.
After the recording ended, Adriano frowned. âWhat does he mean, âitâs a lot bigger than me owning them moneyâ?â
âI donât know!â
âCall him back.â
âHeâs not answering any of my â â
âCall him back NOW.â
I hit redial on the phone, but the call immediately went to voicemail.
âSee?â I snapped.
Then I thought of something else.
âMy mother,â I said in panic. âPlease â we have to go get her â â
âWeâll deal with her in a minute,â Adriano said. âNow tell me what you â â
âPlease, Iâm begging you!â
âIN A MINUTE!â
I burst out crying.
He softened a little bit. âFine, Jesus Christ, weâll get your mother â just tell me what happened before you got to the hotel!â
I sniffled. âI went to the modeling agency⦠there was a woman⦠and a gay guy named Luca did my hair and makeupâ¦â
âWhat woman?â
âShe ran the place, I think. Luca said her name was Martina.â
âWas there anyone else?â
âUm â yes. There was a guy behind a door who told the woman to get me ready. I didnât see him, but he sounded fat.â
âWhat do you mean, he âsounded fatâ?â
âHe wheezed when he spoke.â
Adriano exchanged looks with Massimo. âBautiste.â
âWho?â I asked.
âOne of the Agrella brothers. Heâs in charge of their brothels, so the modeling agency is probably how they recruit girls.â
I felt sick to my stomach.
âWas there anyone else?â Adriano asked. âDid you hear the name Dominic or Savino?â
âNo⦠but there was another man in the office who didnât speak.â
âYou saw him?â
âYes. Just a glimpse before Martina closed the door.â
âDid he see you?â
âI donât think so.â
âWas he older? Gray hair and a mustache?â
âNo â he was young, tall, and thin. Clean-shaven and short hair.â I shuddered as I remembered his face. âHe had cruel eyes.â
âCruel eyes?â
I nodded. âHe looked like he would have enjoyed hurting people.â
âThatâs half the Cosa Nostra,â Lars said sardonically.
Adriano shot him a look, then turned back to me. âAnything else you can remember?â
âNo, I swear.â
âWeâre here,â Lars said as he turned into an alleyway.
We were in a seedy part of Florence â the warehouse district.
The car drove alongside a building until it reached a loading dock.
Lars flashed his lights. One of the sliding metal doors rolled up, and our car pulled in.
On the inside of the loading bay door stood a couple of guys. One had a pistol and the other held the chain that raised the door.
The loading bay was huge, at least a hundred feet long. Off to the right was a small fleet of black vehicles, all lined up in a row.
As we got out of our car, the other two Mercedes drove in behind us. The passenger sides were riddled with bullet holes, and the windows were white from all the cracks in them.
âJesus, what happened?â the guy pulling the chain asked as he lowered the loading bay door.
âThe Agrellas happened,â Adriano said as he hurried to the other cars. âHow bad is it?â
âCosimo and Elio got hit,â a man said. âProbably not fatal, but not good.â
âGet the gunshot doctor over here,â Adriano ordered. He pointed at the guy by the door. âYou â go tell everybody upstairs that we roll out in five minutes.â
âWhere to?â
âWeâre gonna hit the Agrellasâ safe house and get some fuckinâ payback.â
The guy ran up some concrete stairs and went through a metal door.
âAdriano,â I said in a forlorn voice.
He looked over at me. âWhat?â
ââ¦my motherâ¦?â
Adriano scowled like heâd been hit with a migraine. âShit⦠okay, call her and have her go someplace with a bunch of people around â a bar, a restaurant, anyplace like that. Have her wait for us there. Tell her NOT to bring anything with her, like clothes or a suitcase â if sheâs being watched, we donât want to tip anybody off. Vincenzo, get the address and go pick her up.â
Vincenzo didnât look too happy. âI should go with you guys, boss.â
Adriano glared at him. âYOU should do what I TELL you to do.â
âLike how you did what Niccolo said to do?â Massimo muttered â not quite under his breath.
Adriano glared at him. âDonât even start with me right now.â
Massimo held up his hands like Fine, whatever.
Adriano glanced over at his wheelman. âVincenzo â â
âIâll go, Iâll go,â Vincenzo said sullenly.
Adrian slapped him on the shoulder. âGood man.â
âShould I go with him?â I asked Adriano.
âNo, you stay here. Vincenzoâs gonna go get your mother, and then youâll all lay low until we get back. Understood?â
âYes.â
âAnd keep calling your father. I wanna know what he knows about the Agrellas.â
âI will,â I said, then added quietly, âThank you.â
Adriano looked at me for a long second⦠then nodded. âYouâre welcome. Vin, take her upstairs and get her situated while she calls her mom.â
âAre you going to leave somebody to watch her?â Massimo asked.
âSheâs not going to run,â Adriano said, then looked at me. âBecause she knows that if she does, the Agrellas are gonna find her and kill her. Not to mention her parents. Weâre the only chance sheâs got at saving her family.â
A shudder ran down my spine.
It was a reminder that as kind as Adriano could occasionally seemâ¦
â¦he was still a mafioso.
And a killer.
Anything he did for me, he was really only doing for himself.
Vincenzo led me up the concrete stairs.
I glanced back as I followed him â
And saw Adriano watching me as I walked through the door.
When I caught him looking, he turned back to his men. âChop chop, assholes! Weâre out the door in three minutes!â
