Mafia Kings: Adriano: Chapter 20
Mafia Kings: Adriano: Dark Mafia Romance Series #2
The doctor finished with both Cosimo and Elio.
I helped as much as I could, and I was glad to have the distraction â
Because an hour and a half after leaving, Vincenzo still hadnât returned with my mother.
I tried calling her cell phone to find out what was going on â
But I got no reply.
My imagination began to run away with me. I imagined the most horrible things â like men with Uzis walking into the bar and slaughtering everyone inside.
Stupidly, neither Vincenzo nor I had thought to give him my cell phone number. Once Iâd shown him my motherâs picture, he walked out.
I had no way to contact him â so I asked Elio if he could call Vincenzo.
âNo,â he answered. âWe donât have everyoneâs numbers, just our team lead.â
âWhat? Why?â
âIn case we ever get arrested, our bosses donât want the cops to be able to tie all of us together.â
âI thought you guys bribed the cops to leave you alone?!â
He shrugged. âSome of them. Not all of them.â
By the time Adriano walked in, I was frantic.
âAdriano!â I cried out.
He looked tired⦠drained⦠almost haunted. Gone was the fiery temper from earlier. It was like heâd seen something horrible â
Something even worse than what had happened at the hotel.
âWhat happened?â I asked, alarmed.
âNothing,â he said. He gave me a strange look â probably a reaction to seeing me without my wig on for the first time. âWhereâs your mother?â
âVincenzo hasnât come back with her yet!â
âHow long ago did he leave?â
âOver an hour! I call her every five minutes, but she wonât answer!â
A shadow passed over his face as he glanced at Massimo and Lars.
Both men looked alarmed â
And all my worst fears were confirmed.
âOh my god,â I whispered, then burst into tears.
âItâs fine, itâll be fine,â Adriano said quietly. âIâll call him â just calm down.â
I stifled my tears while he called Vincenzo, who answered immediately.
âHey, boss.â
I could hear the raucous sounds of a bar as Adriano put him on speakerphone. âWhat the fuckâs going on? Why arenât you back yet?â
âThe old lady isnât here.â
âWhat do you mean she isnât there?!â
âSheâs not here. Iâve been waiting for half an hour, but she hasnât come in.â
âWhy didnât you go to her place?!â
âI, uh⦠I donât know where she lives.â
âWhy didnât you call Bianca?!â
âI didnât get her number. I realize now I should have, but I didnât think about it at the time. I was just trying to get out the door as fast as possible â â
âPlease, we have to go check on her,â I begged Adriano.
âIf you tell me where it is, Iâll go over there now.â
âNo,â Adriano said, and my heart stopped. I was about to scream at him when he said, âIâm coming. Stay at the bar in case she shows up.â
Then he hung up and turned to me. âGive me the address and Iâll go get her myself.â
âIâm going with you,â I said.
âNo â â
âYES. Sheâs my MOTHER. Iâve done everything you asked â please. Please, I have to go with you.â
Adriano looked conflicted for a second⦠then nodded. âAlright. Letâs go.â
âThat might not be the best choice,â Lars said.
He was trying to be diplomatic, but his meaning was clear:
We might find something horrible back at my parentsâ apartmentâ¦
And he didnât want me to see it.
Adriano smiled grimly. âWhich is why you and Massimo are coming with me.â
Massimoâs ordinarily placid face grew angry. âWeâve got hired killers out there slaughtering Cosa Nostra, and you want us to go put ourselves in danger for a civilian?!â
Hired killers out there slaughtering Cosa Nostra.
I stared at him in horror.
Adriano didnât see my reaction because he got right up in Massimoâs face. âIf theyâre after her mother, that means her mother is valuable. Which means she knows something. Which is something WE need to know. So letâs GO.â
Adriano took me by the arm and gently pulled me towards the stairs.
After a secondâs hesitation, both Lars and Massimo followed behind us.
