Mafia Kings: Adriano: Chapter 21
Mafia Kings: Adriano: Dark Mafia Romance Series #2
I rode in the back of the Mercedes with Adriano. Lars drove and Massimo sat beside him.
I tried to keep it together during the car ride â I really did.
But I also kept obsessively calling my motherâs phone every two minutes.
Adriano put his hand on mine.
âYouâve got to stop,â he said quietly.
âIâm just⦠Iâ¦â
âI know. But itâs going to be okay. I promise you Iâm going to get her, and itâs going to be okay.â
I sobbed. âYou donât know that.â
âI know this: all weâve got right now is hope. Donât give that up until thereâs no other choice.â
I looked deep into his eyes.
He was being so kind to me. He could have just thrown me out into the street to fend for myself.
I nodded and smiled through my tears. âOkay.â
Lars pulled the car up to the front of my parentsâ building and we all got out.
Adriano, Lars, and Massimo pulled out pistols as we walked to the lobby door.
I punched in the code on the callbox, the door buzzed, and Adriano opened it. Then we continued inside and up the stairs.
As we reached the fourth floor, I suddenly froze.
âOh shit!â
Adriano looked at me in alarm. âWhat?â
âMy keys â theyâre in my purse at the modeling agency!â
âYou left your purse at the modeling agency?!â
âAnd my clothes, and my ID â â
âWhy?!â
âI couldnât exactly bring everything with me â and I thought I was coming back right!â
âSo you donât have a way to get in?â
I shook my head miserably.
âNot a problem,â Massimo said. âWhatâs the apartment number?â
â412. Shouldnât we knock, though?â
âNo. If somethingâs wrong, we donât want to let them know weâre coming.â
When we got to my parentsâ door, Massimo tried the doorknob. Locked.
He mouthed One⦠two⦠three â
Then slammed into the door with all his weight.
The lock gave way and the door crashed in.
Massimo was inside first, followed by Adriano and Lars with their guns out â
And they all began yelling at the same time.
âStop!â
âDonât shoot!â
âPut it down!â
I rushed into the apartment behind them â
And my heart stopped when I saw who they were talking to.
Sergio Pasquarelli stood behind my mother, using her as a human shield.
He also held a gun to her head.
âMAMA!â I screamed.
My mother looked absolutely terrified. Tears were streaming down her face.
But to be honest, Sergio didnât look much better.
Every time Iâd seen him in the past, heâd always worn an expression of smug confidenceâ¦
But now he was panicking.
âIâll kill her â I swear Iâll fuckinâ kill her â â
âWe donât want you, man!â Adriano yelled. âWe donât care about you â weâre only here for her!â
âPut your guns down â Iâll kill her, Iâll fuckinâ kill her â â
âWhy are you here?â Lars yelled at Sergio.
The gangster laughed bitterly. âWhy do you think?â
âTo kill her?!â I screamed.
Sergio looked over at me in surprise. âNo â to keep from beinâ killed!â
âHold on,â Adriano said. âWhatâre you talking about?â
Sergio laughed again, though it sounded more like hysteria â like he was barely hanging on to his sanity. âYou were there â you know!â
For the first time, I wondered if he was drunk⦠or maybe in shock.
âAt the hotel?â Adriano asked.
âYES, at the hotel! You saw them â you killed some of them!â Sergio said, and then he sobbed. âAnd then they turned on usâ¦â
âWho?! Who were they?!â
Sergio shook his head like a little boy. âIâm not supposed to tellâ¦â
âYou tell me who they were, and Iâll keep you safe.â
Sergio gave another frantic, half-insane laugh. âYou canât keep me safe. Not from the devilâ¦â
âWho hired them?!â Adriano demanded.
Sergio shook his head again. âHeâll kill me if I tell.â
âWhoever he is, he already killed seven men in one of your safe houses,â Adriano snarled. âAnd he torched the Agrellasâ mansion in Fiesole. So if you want us to protect you, you need to tell me who did this.â
Sergio stared at him blankly. ââ¦theyâre deadâ¦? Don Agrella is dead?â
âI donât know for sure, but it didnât look good. Now WHO DID THIS?â
Sergio looked at me, and the next words out of his mouth chilled me to my soul.
âTheyâre coming for her⦠because they want her father. Heâs the only one who knows. But I got her mother, so now Iâve got somethinâ to bargain with.â
âBargain with me,â Adriano said forcefully. âIâll keep you safe â bargain with me.â
âI told you⦠you canât keep me safe,â Sergio whimpered. âHeâs the devil⦠heâs the fuckinâ devilâ¦â
What happened next was pure coincidence.
It was a simple thing, but it happened at precisely the right moment.
Or wrong moment, depending on your point of view.
The door â which Massimo had broken through â shifted or something, but it began to closeâ¦
Which made the hinges creak loudly.
Sergio was so on edge that he whipped his gun towards the door as though he was expecting the âdevilâ he kept talking about to appear.
Massimo and Lars glanced back to see what the creaking noise was, obviously afraid someone might have snuck up on us â
But not Adriano.
Adriano pulled the trigger.
BLAM!
Sergioâs head snapped back in a spray of blood and he collapsed to the ground.
My mother fell on top of him, dragged down by his arm around her neck.
I screamed, too, afraid that Adriano might have hit her.
I ran over to her shrieking, âMama â MAMA â â
But she was moving and crying and making noise.
Sergio wasnât.
I collapsed onto the floor next to her and pulled her into my arms. âMama, are you okay?! Are you okay?!â
âYes, yes â Blessed Virgin â â
Behind me, I heard Massimo yell, âWHY THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT?!â
Adriano ignored him and hurried over to me. âIs she alright?â
I looked up at him, nodded through my tears, and silently mouthed Thank you.
He nodded somberly.
Then he turned back to face his brotherâs wrath.
âWHY?â Massimo yelled again.
âI had the shot,â Adriano said coldly. âSo I took it.â
âHe was our only lead to whoâs behind all this!â
âWeâve got the mother â â
âYou heard him â she doesnât know anything!â
âIf we can get the father, then â â
âWE DONâT HAVE THE FATHER!â Massimo roared. âBut we had HIM!â
There was murder in Adrianoâs eyes as he said, âI told you already: I had the shot, so I took it. Now stop talking about it.â
Massimo looked like he wanted to slam his fist through Adrianoâs face, but he reigned in his anger.
Adriano continued. âYou and Lars are going to take Bianca, her mother, and everybody else back home.â
Massimo suddenly looked confused. âBy âeverybody else,â you mean â â
âOur men. All of them. Youâre getting what you wanted, Mass â Iâm pulling you out of Florence.â
âWhat about you?â
âIâm going to find her father.â
âWhat?!â
âIâll go with you,â I said from the floor where I still held my mother.
Adriano turned back to me. âNo â â
âYou donât know anything about him!â I protested. âYou donât even know what he looks like!â
Adriano glanced at a nearby shelf and snatched up a picture in a small metal frame. âNow I do.â
âThat was from ten years ago â he looks way older now.â
âClose enough.â
âYou donât know his name, you donât know where he hangs out â I know all of that! I can help you!â
âItâs too dangerous.â
âWhat, worse than a bunch of guys with Uzis shooting at me?!â
âYou have no idea what youâre â â
âI have to find my father. PLEASE. Let me help you.â
Adriano stared at me⦠then finally relented.
âAlright,â he muttered as he tossed the picture onto the couch.
At the most inopportune moment, my mother suddenly took a good look at me. âBianca⦠what in the world are you wearing?â
I looked down.
I still had on my leather dominatrix outfit.
Thank goodness Iâd ditched the blue wig.
âYou look like a streetwalker!â
âMama, now is not the time!â
âGo grab some clothes â we gotta get out of here,â Adriano ordered. Then he held out a hand to my mother on the floor. âYou, too, maâam.â
Mama looked up at him distrustfully.
She glanced over at me for a sign.
When I nodded, she took Adrianoâs hand.
He helped her up to her feet. âGo pack. Quickly. Both of you.â
I nodded, and my mother and I rushed to our rooms.
