Mafia Kings: Adriano: Chapter 54
Mafia Kings: Adriano: Dark Mafia Romance Series #2
Istood outside the detention center, trying to keep a low profile in the dark.
De Luca was only inside for five minutes before he walked out with Bianca in tow.
She looked worried â until she saw me.
Her mouth dropped open â
And then she ran and jumped into my arms.
I spun her around and kissed her.
A few seconds later, though, she broke off the kiss and started talking a mile a minute.
âOh my GOD â what happened?! I was sure you were â wait, what are you wearing?!â
âIn a minute,â I said, then looked at De Luca. âOkay, go do the other thing.â
He nodded, then walked back into the detention center.
âAdriano, whatâs going on?!â she whispered.
I told her almost everything â how Moretti had tried to kill me, how Iâd escaped, and how Iâd found De Luca.
But I left out a few key details.
It took me about a few minutes to relate the story.
She was horrified about the part where I could have gotten shot â
And she held my wounded hand like it was a baby bird.
âOh my god, I canât believe â oh,â she whined, then kissed me tenderly.
âIâm fine. Itâs nothing.â
âWhat happened to the cop you knocked out?â
âHopefully heâs still hogtied in the interrogation room and nobodyâs found him yet.â
âWhat are we going to do now?â she asked.
âPick up your dad,â I said.
She looked at me like I was an asshole. âAnd how are we supposed to do that?â
I grinned. âTurn around.â
De Luca was walking out of the detention center with another man.
He was probably 45 or 50, short and stocky.
He looked rumpled, unshaven, and incredibly frightened â like he was afraid he could be killed any second.
That is, until Bianca turned around.
She froze in place.
So did he, his eyes wide.
ââ¦Daddy?â she cried out, her voice on the edge of tears.
âPaperotta,â he whispered.
Little duck.
She ran to him and he hugged her tight.
Relief and pure love washed over his face.
âI thought you were d-dead,â Bianca blubbered.
âIâm sorry, honey,â he said. âIt was the only way â â
âTo keep yourself alive,â I said as I walked up. âVery smart, too.â
Bianca turned around and wiped tears from her eyes.
Mr. Lettieri looked at me in fright. âWho are you?â
âThis is Adriano, Papa,â Bianca said. âHe saved my life.â
Lettieri frowned. âThank you â but how â ?â
âAll in good time,â I said, then turned back to De Luca. âEverything okay?â
He looked around nervously. âYeah, but it might be a good idea for you to get a move on.â
âYou got a car?â
ââ¦yeah?â he said, like he didnât like the sound of that.
âIâm gonna need it.â
He grimaced. âDonât you have your own car?â
âYes, but somebody may be watching it. Donât worry, Iâll pay you extra for it. Besides, youâre not gonna need it in Thailand. What is it?â
âA 2012 Fiat.â
âHowâs an extra 20 grand sound?â
The cop looked astounded. âUhhhhh⦠okayâ¦?â
âGo get it. Quick.â
The cop nodded, then started jogging down the street.
Lettieri got a sick look on his face. âThere arenât many people who would pay a policeman 20 thousand euros for his car at the drop of a hat.â
I knew heâd figured out I was Cosa Nostra.
âDonât worry,â I said. âIâm on your side. Ask your daughter if you need confirmation.â
Bianca nodded. âHeâs okay, Dad. He is, I promise.â
Lettieri didnât look reassured.
I couldnât blame him, given his years of experience with the Agrellasâ¦
But I figured heâd come around.
âWe need to get my wife,â Lettieri said, a worried look on his face.
âSheâs safe,â I told him.
âWhere?â
âOut in the countryside, where weâre going.â
Lettieri looked even more frightened. ââ¦whereâs that?â
âMy familyâs place. Donât worry, itâs going to be fine. Youâre among friends now.â
âAnd why, exactly, are you doing all this?â he asked. âNo disrespect intended.â
âNone taken. To be honest, you have information I need. That my family needs. But thatâs only part of it.â
âAnd whatâs the other part?â
I looked at Bianca and my heart swelled.
After only 24 hours of knowing her, I wasnât ready to say the words that I really wanted toâ¦
The words I feltâ¦
But I think the feeling carried through anyway.
âI care for your daughter a great deal,â I said. âYouâre important to her⦠and so youâre important to me.â
The smile Bianca gave me through her tears?
All the reward I would ever need.
