Mafia Kings: Adriano: Chapter 63
Mafia Kings: Adriano: Dark Mafia Romance Series #2
ââ¦And then the old woman confessed that sheâd killed their father right before she bit into a cyanide capsule and died.â
Alessandra was finishing her story as we strolled through one of the topiary gardens.
I hadnât thought anything could take my mind off of Adriano â
But Alessandraâs story had knocked me for a loop.
I stared at her, eyes wide. âYouâre kidding.â
âNope.â
âSo youâre a long-lost mafia princess who fell in love with a mafia don⦠you fought with him and left⦠then you got kidnapped and brought back to the house at gunpoint⦠but your husband and his brothers killed the bad guys and saved you⦠and then you shot an evil bitch before she could kill your husband?â
âWell, he wasnât my husband at the time,â Alessandra said with an amused look. âBut, yes⦠thatâs it in a nutshell.â
âI can see why he married you. Damn, youâre a badass.â
Alessandra burst out laughing. âI am SO not a badass!â
âYou saved Darioâs life!â
âYes, but â â
âAnd you nearly got killed in the process!â
âWhat about you?â Alessandra said, a friendly challenge in her voice. âThe way I heard it, you faced down a bunch of hitmen with Uzis.â
I made a face. âI was in the other room on my cell phone when Adriano and the others ran in.â
âAnd then you climbed down a rope and escaped the assassins â â
âI was basically just rescued by Adriano.â
Alessandra put a firm hand on my arm and stopped me in my tracks. âAnd you stayed with him in Florence when he sent Lars and Massimo home, even though you knew you were being hunted!â
âYeah, but I was trying to save my father â â
âAnd you faced down all that danger and were the only reason Adriano found your father.â Alessandra frowned and smiled at the same time, like What are you DOING?! âWhy are you trying to downplay your bravery? You didnât sign up for any of this â youâd never faced anything like it â and yet you were as brave as any man in this family.â
âNo, I wasnât â I was terrified.â
âYou think that doesnât make you brave?! Thatâs the definition of bravery â that you were terrified but you did it anyway!â
âBut⦠you got kidnapped, and had a gun to your head, and shot somebody â â
âAnd I was shitting a brick the entire time!â
I burst out laughing.
Alessandra was so dainty and beautiful that it was hilarious to hear such a crude expression come out of her mouth.
She grinned and hooked her arm through mine as we continued walking. âNever downplay what youâve done for this family. Or for your own. Never.â
ââ¦okayâ¦â I said grudgingly but with a smile on my face.
âDario and my brothers are extremely grateful for what youâve done for them.â
âBut I didnât â â
Alessandra flashed me a warning look.
ââ¦okay, good,â I said with a sheepish grin.
She smiled approvingly, then got an impish look. âAnd Adriano is quite taken with you.â
I sighed. âWeâve only known each other two days.â
âI only knew Dario two weeks before we got engaged.â
I stared at her. âYouâre kidding.â
âNope.â
âHe fell in love with you that fast?â
âHe did. It took us going through hell before we got there, but he finally realized how he felt about me.â
âYeah, well, Adriano and I kind of got off to a rocky start.â
âGetting shot at isnât the way you want to spend your first date,â she agreed.
âOh, it wasnât just that. I thought he was an asshole. A very⦠hot⦠asshole.â
âWhat, and you think I was any different? I hated Dario at the beginning.â
âYou did?!â
Alessandra made a face. âHe kidnapped me and held me here against my will! Of course I hated him!â
âWhyâd you marry him, then?!â
âI said at the beginning.â Alessandra sighed dreamily. âAnd even if I hated him⦠he was hot, tooâ¦â
I laughed. âYeah. I know that feeling.â
âAnd he proved that no one would ever protect me the way he could.â
I nodded.
I knew that feeling, too.
I saw Alessandra looking at me out of the corner of my eye. When I glanced at her, she smiled.
âYou know, ever since I met him â which was the exact same night I met Dario â I always thought of Adriano as âthe Angry One.â He always had a temper⦠he never smiled⦠and he was a total grump. But whenever heâs around you, itâs like heâs a whole different person.â
I smiled.
Just knowing that made my heart swellâ¦
But a dark thought crossed my mind.
Alessandra saw it on my face. âWhat?â
âI just⦠I donât want to say anything that might offend you, because youâve been so kind to meâ¦â
She waved her hand dismissively. âGo ahead and say it.â
I hesitated⦠then finally came out with it. âMy father has been in trouble with the mafia my entire life, and Iâve grown up hating them for it. I donât⦠know if I can be with a man whoâ¦â
My voice trailed off.
Alessandra nodded sagely. âWhen I first met Dario, I thought of him in my head as il Mostro. Iâd heard the name my entire life. This feared mafia don who ruled with an iron fist over all of Tuscany. I was terrified of him⦠and I hated him.â
I stared at her. âWhat happened?â
âI got to know him. And I realized that il Mostro was what people called Darioâs father⦠not him. Heâs only been don for a couple of months, not much longer than heâs known me⦠and heâs different from everything Iâd thought about the mafia. All of his brothers are. Yes, theyâre involved in illegal things. Yes, they work outside the law. Theyâre neck-deep in political corruption. Theyâve killed men, although it was always men who came after them first. Theyâd done all sorts of things that could land them in jail for the rest of their lives.
âBut they have a code. For instance, they wonât do anything with drugs, human trafficking, or prostitution. They cut it out of the business after their father died. They refuse to be involved in any of it⦠and they nearly paid for that choice with their lives when they said ânoâ to the man who kidnapped me.
âAre they saints? No. Are they bad men? I donât think so. I think theyâre good men in a bad world, who do some bad things because thatâs what they know. Thatâs all theyâve ever known. But itâs all about family for them⦠about keeping the family safe, and together, and whole.â
Alessandra sighed.
âAll I know is that I love Dario⦠totally and completely⦠and Iâm willing to compromise if that means I get to keep him. Maybe that says something awful about me. But heâs assured me that they donât want to live this life forever. Roberto has a plan to make everything legitimate in two years, and Dario swore to me that our children would never be involved in the family business.â
âAnd the first oneâs on the way, right?â I asked.
She looked at me quizzically. âDid Adriano tell you?â
âNo â I saw you didnât drink any alcohol last night, so I just assumed.â
âIâm only a couple of months along, so Iâm not even showing yet.â
âCongratulations!â
âThank you!â She hugged my arm. âYouâre very observant to have figured that out.â
âEh, it was just a lucky guess.â
Alessandra got a stern look on her face. âWhat did I tell you about downplaying â â
âIâm very observant,â I said dutifully, with a bit of humor in my voice.
âGOOD,â she said, and nodded her approval.
I loved being around Alessandra. Even though she was a couple of years younger than me, she seemed wiser.
Maybe it was all the life experience sheâd had â a lifetime for most people, all crammed into the last couple of months.
In a way, she felt almost like an older sisterâ¦
Which is something Iâd never had and desperately wanted.
And like an older sister, she liked to pry.
âSo⦠Adriano,â she said with a big grin.
âYyyyyyyeeeees?â
She looked at me in that impish way she had. âAre you in love with him?â
My mouth dropped open.
I tried to say something, but nothing came out.
âIâm sorry,â she apologized. âThat was incredibly personal â I shouldnât have â â
âYes,â I whispered. ââ¦yes, I guess I am.â
It hit me like a ton of bricks.
I hadnât even thought about itâ¦
Not reallyâ¦
But it was undeniable once I was forced to put it into words.
I felt more for him more than any other man Iâd ever dated.
Hell, more than all the others combined.
The feelings werenât even comparable.
The other guys were sparks from my past⦠glowing embers, even when Iâd been with themâ¦
But Adriano filled me with a heat as bright and hot as the sun.
âThatâs the first time youâve said it, isnât it?â Alessandra asked.
ââ¦yesâ¦â
âThank you,â she murmured.
âFor what?â
âFor trusting me enough to tell me.â She smiled and squeezed my arm. âI know heâs in love with you.â
That stopped me dead in my tracks.
Alessandra pulled up short, yanked to a halt by me stopping, and looked at me with comically wide eyes.
âHow do you â why do you â â I stammered.
She scoffed. âYouâre not the only observant one around here. I see the way he looks at you.â
Part of me just thought that was him caught up in the moment⦠because the sex was so goodâ¦
And that he probably acted that way with all the women he dated.
I struggled to put my fears into words. âHeâs notâ¦â
âA player? No. Valentino, yes â heâs too pretty for his own good. But not Adriano. He might have been a long time ago, before I knew him⦠but since his father died six months ago, theyâve basically been consumed with trying to keep the business afloat.â
His father.
I remembered what he had told me in the dressing room of the thrift shopâ¦
The secret he had revealedâ¦
The one that cracked my heart wide open.
Looking back on it, that was the moment that my emotions had gone from just lustâ¦
To love.
âSo thereâs no one else?â I asked hopefully.
Adriano already told me in the restaurant last night that heâd never had a long-term girlfriend.
But it would be nice to hear confirmation from someone else.
Alessandra shook her head. âAs far as I know, there hasnât been anyone in his life for at least six months. And never anything serious.â
She paused, then added, ââ¦before you.â
Then she grinned again. âTrust me, youâve turned him from â whoâs that American puppet that lives in a trash can? The one on the childrenâs show?â
âOscar the Grouch?â
âYes! You turned Adriano from Oscar the Grouch to â I donât know if heâs Prince Charming yet, but heâs definitely on the way.â
âA very angry Prince Charming,â I said wryly.
Alessandra laughed. âThe angriest!â
