Mafia Kings: Adriano: Chapter 99
Mafia Kings: Adriano: Dark Mafia Romance Series #2
The big day came⦠and it was perfect.
My friends from design school all cameâ¦
As did a dozen of my parentsâ friends.
Alessandra was my maid of honor, and my roommate Emma was a bridesmaid.
Dario was Adrianoâs best man, and Massimo was the groomsman.
But oddly, outside of his brothers, not that many people attended on Adrianoâs side. Only Alessandraâs long-lost relatives from Genoa were there.
Niccolo gave me an explanation while Alessandra was doing a final once-over of my dress.
âNormally, we have all sorts of guests,â Niccolo said. âPeople you hope youâll never see again in your life â members of other families.â
âMafia families,â I clarified.
He sighed. ââ¦the Cosa Nostra, yes.â
I had noticed he didnât like referring to them as âmafia.â He always used Cosa Nostra instead.
âMy wedding was the strangest thing ever,â Alessandra told me. âAll these strangers around me, some of whom wanted Dario dead.â
âWhyâd they come, then?â I asked in astonishment. âAnd whyâd you let them?!â
âItâs a diplomatic thing,â Niccolo explained. âWeâre like a bunch of warring nation-states who call a truce for weddings. We make an appearance⦠pay our respects⦠and then go back to trying to kill each other the next day.â
âWonderful,â I muttered.
âIsnât it?â he said with mock cheerfulness.
âThen why arenât there any warring nation-states here today?â
âFallout from the Mezzasalma situation. Rome, Venice, Italy, Milan, and Naples are still keeping their distance, and everybody else is afraid of angering them. They want to see how it all shakes out first. Therefore⦠a lot fewer guests than normal.â
âHuhâ¦â
âTrust me â youâre not missing anything. I guess they do tend to give a lot of cash as wedding gifts, but donât worry â weâve got you covered.â
I laughed. âMoney is the least of my worries these days â which is something I never thought I would say.â
Niccolo smiled. âHow are you holding up?â
He meant my injuries from the car crash.
âGreat. I feel back to normal again. Iâm better off than Adriano.â
My fiancéâs fractured ribs were still causing him pain. The doctors had said it might take 12 weeks before everything healed fully.
âHeâll be fine,â Niccolo said, waving it off. âHeâs tough.â
âNiccolo, seriously⦠is everything okay? Not just Adriano â I mean everything else.â
âMezzasalmaâs men are all dead or fled â and with the Agrellas gone, Florence is fully in our hands for the first time ever. Adriano has restored order, the police have calmed down, weâve paid off the politicians, and everythingâs back to normal. Better than normal, actually. We no longer have a bunch of shady business partners stabbing us in the back.â
âBut Mezzasalma was Sicilian,â I said, and turned to Alessandra. âDidnât you tell me the old lady who tried to kill Dario was Sicilian, too?â
ââ¦yes,â Alessandra admitted.
âThatâs a pretty big coincidence, isnât it?â
âWe have our issues with the Sicilians,â Niccolo said, âbut weâll handle it. Just like weâll handle Rome and Venice and the rest.â
âWhat about the man I saw at the modeling agency?â
âProbably just a minor player. Might have been nobody. If heâs important, Iâm sure heâll pop up again someday.â
âBut â â
âLook,â Niccolo said as he took my hands, âI wonât lie to you: there will be difficulties. There always are in our line of work. But we will prevail. And everything you did â every risk you took, every time you were willing to sacrifice for this family â is a huge part of why weâll prevail. So no more worrying about this, alright? Just enjoy today⦠and relax.â
I smiled. âOkay.â
He kissed my hand affectionately â
And then we heard the organ music start.
âBetter hurry,â he said playfully. âDonât want to be late for your own wedding.â
The ceremony took place on the emerald lawn behind the Rosolinisâ mansion.
There were dozens of folding chairs set out, along with gorgeous flower arrangements that led up to the altar.
My father barely kept it together as he walked me down the aisle. I smiled and kissed him, then joined Adriano at the altar.
He had never looked more handsome than he was at that moment â and he stared at me with more love in his eyes than I had ever seen before.
When we both said âI do,â and the priest said, âYou may now kiss the brideâ â
It was the most romantic moment of my life.
Adriano held me in his arms and kissed meâ¦
And the entire world faded awayâ¦
Until I was brought back by the cheers of my friends and family.
Everythingâ¦
â¦was absolutely perfect.
