The Substitute Wife My Poor Husband is a Billionaire
Chapter 1034 Laneyâs Sacrifice
Laneyâs smile faltered, and she was no longer in the mood to finish the cake. âIâll wait until the baby is
born. I donât want to endure it all the time, and I wonât.â
Janet immediately noticed that something was wrong with Laney. She held Laneyâs hands and
worriedly asked, âIs there anything I donât know about yet?â
When she touched Laneyâs hands, they were cold and clammy.
âIâm fine. Donât worry about me,â Laney assured. It was just that what had happened in the past few
months suddenly flashed in her mind. She sighed heavily and started to tell Janet her story.
Since Laney and Garrett moved out of the Harding familyâs house, Vera came to visit them from time to
time. She acted as if she cared about Laneyâs health. But the truth was, she just wanted them to move
back into the family house.
Vera was not a shrew. She knew better than to make trouble in public. So, to make Laney go back
home willingly, she would always bring Laneyâs favorite desserts and have a good chat with her
whenever she visited.
After a while, Laney learned to live with it. Whenever Veraâs behavior was becoming unbearable, Laney
would call Garrettâs father and ask him to have someone pick Vera up.
One time, when Leo once again had to forcefully take Vera home, she sobbed and complained that her
kindness did not pay off.
Laney believed that Veraâs intention was pure. It was just that she didnât want to go back with them
because she didnât like the rules of the upper class, which made her feel suffocated.
Vera did not come to see Laney again for a long time after the incident. But some time later, Leo invited
Garrett and Laney to dinner.
âYour mother always says she wants you to go home or, at least, visit her more often. Sheâs lonely at
home. Truthfully speaking, I came to talk to you about how we can fix this,â Leo said without beating
around the bush.
Laney could see that all the members of the Harding family were accomplished. They did not just make
assumptions. And if there was a problem, they would say it and solve it as soon as they could.
âFine. Weâll move back home today,â Garrett said, which made Laneyâs expression change.
Nevertheless, he remained firm, and he continued, âMy relationship with my mother is bad as it is. If
you want it to get worse, be my guest. Just to let you know, Iâll quarrel with her every single day. Iâll
even argue with the shareholders in the company too. The Harding family will never be peaceful again.â
Leo cleared his throat. âWhat are you talking about? Havenât I told you that the family who stays
together prospers together? But since itâs true that your mother has become quite too much, Iâll
encourage her to go out more often and meet some friends. That way, sheâll be distracted and wonât
harass you anymore.â
Garrett had been running the Harding Group well in the past few months, and Leo did not want to have
a fallout with him. With this in mind, he figured it would be best to allow Laney and Garrett to stay
where they wanted for the time being.
âBut thatâs all I can do. When the baby is born, the three of you must come back and live with us. The
baby needs a good environment to grow up.â
âDo you think Laney and I arenât capable of raising the baby well?â Garrett sneered.
He could not help but express his grievances as his parents did not seem to trust them in raising their
own child.
Just as Garrett was about to open his mouth to speak, Laney tugged the hem of his shirt, urging him to
stop arguing with his father. He merely looked at her and said, âLaney, if you compromise again, theyâll
just bully you more in the future!â
Laney smiled at Leo and politely said, âPlease donât take Garrettâs words to heart. Heâs drunk, and he
doesnât know what heâs saying. Weâll go back home after I give birth. We moved out because pregnant
women can be moody sometimes, and I just donât want to cause trouble for people around me.â
âI donât understand how you could be so tolerant!â Janet interrupted her friendâs narration while showing
the same incredulous expression.
âI donât want Garret to argue with his parents because of me. Although they donât think highly of me, Iâm
sure theyâll treat my baby well and only give the baby the best.â
Out of her love for Garrett and their baby, Laney compromised by agreeing to go back to the Harding
family house after giving birth. This was her decision after careful consideration.
âIf you do this, they will only think youâre a pushover,â Janet reminded.
âDonât worry about it. Iâll handle everything on my own,â Laney assured. From the sound of it, she had
made up her mind.
âIf you say so. If you need my help, donât hesitate to call me.â Janet stroke Laneyâs baby bump and said
to the unborn baby, âTake good care of your mother after youâre born, okay? She loves you with all her
heart.â
âThe baby isnât born yet. How can he understand what youâve said?â Laney chuckled. She touched her
belly with mixed feelings. It was also hard to tell if her smile was genuine.
