Chapter 497: It’s Human Nature
The Substitute Wife: My Poor Husband Is A Billionaire
After hesitating for a good while, Ethan then proceeded to tell them the truth. Beal and Johanna
couldnât believe their ears.
âWhere is Lila?! I need to talk to her!â Beal couldnât believe that Lila would actually be capable of doing
such a thing.
âSheâs no longer here in the hospital.â Ethan glanced over at the expression etched on their faces. It
really seemed like they couldnât believe it.
Johanna mulled it over in her head for a while and found it hard to believe that her daughter, whom
she had raised for so many years, would actually do such a thing. She started to have many doubts in
her mind.
âWhy would Lila do such a thing?â Ethan had always respected Beal and Johanna, but when he heard
her question, he knew that she didnât believe a word he said. His eyes darkened visibly.
âThe two coaches have witnessed this matter, yet youâre unwilling to believe me. Janet happens to be
your biological daughter, Mrs. White. Lila wanted to get rid of her for a good reason. Are you going to
defend a murderer who tried to kill your very own flesh and blood?â His firm voice made Johanna
startled for a complete moment there. Johanna and Beal thought it over for a long time at the door.
âBrandon, we raised Lila and have always treated her like our very own daughter. Weâll investigate this
matter, but I donât want to jump to any conclusions for the time being.â
With a very calm and indifferent look on his face, Ethan said to them, âBut Janet is your biological
daughter. As her parents, you should be on her side no matter what.â
He paused for a beat and went on to say, âBefore you found Janet, Lila was considered your only
daughter. But after Janet showed up, she must feel her limelight was stolen by Janet. She must really
despise Janet from the bottom of her heart. With Janet out of the way, she could finally get her previous
life back. Mrs. White, youâve been in the business world for so many years now, you should know more
about human nature than I do, am I right?â
He had a fair point.
Johanna felt unhappy being lectured by Ethan, but at the same time, she felt happy for Janet that she
had found someone who would be by her side no matter what. Janet was so very lucky. Johannaâs face
suddenly darkened noticeably.
âI just want to say that I wasnât trying to defend Lila. I just thought she knew better than to do
something like that. Everything that she had belonged to Janet. She had enjoyed it on Janetâs behalf all
these years. Now that Janet has returned to us, we didnât treat Lila like garbage. Instead, we kept her in
the White family and still treated her like our own daughter; she should feel grateful for that.
Furthermore, as far as I know, she could never be this cruel and heartless.â
âThatâs true, but human beings tend to be greedy. People are never satisfied with what they have,â
Ethan said in a rather indifferent tone.
âBesides, even if she didnât have the guts to plan it herself, when she saw the chance to kill Janet
without even lifting a finger, she tookBeal and Johanna let out a long sigh. â
After we got our Janet back, we had to share our love among our girls. Without it having to be said, we
couldnât love Lila as much as we did before. Or else it wouldnât be fair for Janet,â Beal said.
âBut I can see how sharing our love would make Lila resent us. What should we do next?â Ethan didnât
say a word for a long time and then he finally said, âNow that things have come to this, whatâs your next
move? Are you going to side with Lila?â
Johanna turned to look at Janet and said, âIâm going to ask Lila why she didnât tell Janet about the
broken string.â Johanna still harbored some hope for Lila.
âWe have to investigate this matter,â Janet said and pursed her lips together tightly. Even though she
said it in a gentle tone, she looked very sullen.
âIf it was really Lila, I wonât let her get away with this!â
