Chapter 0012
Fall For My Ex's Mafia Dad
When Kent walks into his office, heâs surprised to see Daniel standing there, staring out the window,
watching a car pull away.
âWho is in that car?â Daniel asks.
Kent crosses to his desk and sits down in his chair, folding his hands. He takes a moment to study his
son. Daniel is tall, handsome, clever; but he doesnât yet have the grit that he needs to lead this family.
âIf you already know,â Kent says softly. âWhy donât you just tell me what youâre thinking?â
âFine,â Daniel says, and Kent is happy to hear some anger in his voice. Daniel turns to look Kent in the
eye. âThatâs my girlfriendâs family, riding away in that car. What did you do to them?â
âI did nothing to them,â Kent says, âexcept a favor to Fay Thompson, this girlfriend you never told me
about. Tell me, how long have you been seeing her?â
âCut the crap, dad,â Daniel says, angrily crossing to confront him. Kent smiles, pleased to see a little
fire in this studious boy. âYou know Iâve only been seeing her for a few months â you know ââ
âI know,â Kent interrupts, âthat she is not who you thought she was. And I know that youâve already
heard all about this from your gossip of a bodyguard. So why donât you ask me your real question,â
Kent says, looking at his son coldly.
Daniel grits his teeth and puts his hands in his pockets, in so many ways the very picture of his father.
âDo I really have to marry her?â
âYou have been engaged to Fay Alden since your childhood,â Kent says quietly. âIt would be an
advantageous match. Sheâs got the connections, the family, the money youâd need to keep this family
afloat. The question isâ¦do you want her?â
Daniel looks away from him, embarrassed. âSheâs fine. Sheâs very nice. And funny.â
âWhat,â Kent says, his voice deliberately mocking. âIs that all? She doesnât do it for you, Daniel?
Doesnât raise yourâ¦heartrate?â
Daniel blushes and scowls. âNo, itâs nothing like that â itâs just ââ
âItâs just what, Daniel,â his father says, banging his hand on the desk, trying to shock the truth out of
him. âYouâve got other girls on the line?â
âNo,â Daniel says quickly, glaring. âI haveâ¦I have lots of girlfriends, you know. Girls for differentâ¦
occasionsâ¦â he mumbles this, and his father subtly shakes his head.
Kent knows his son hasâ¦proclivities. Frankly, he doesnât care, as long as Daniel does his duty by the
family.
âYou will take a wife,â Kent says, his voice granite.
âI will.â Daniel says, his head hanging a little, acknowledging his obligation. âI just want to make sure
sheâs the right one.â
Kent stands to put his hand on Danielâs shoulder, glad to see him acknowledge his responsibilities. âSo,
what are the objections to a girl like Fay?â
Daniel shrugs, not knowing what to say, except the unthinkable: she knows Iâm gay and she hates me
for it.
âWhat,â Kent presses, giving him a little shake. âIs sheâ¦impure? Does she fool around with other
guys?â
Daniel looks up at his father, frowning, a little pissed off at his implications. âCome on, Dad,â he snaps.
âYou know sheâs not.â
Kent laughs and shakes his sonâs shoulder. âGood, itâs good to get angry sometimes, son. Let it feed
you. Take it, control it.â
Daniel sighs, sorry to have played into his fatherâs hand once again. âYou know Fay isâ¦pure. Iâm the
only guy sheâs ever dated, her first love. And I havenât touched her.â
His father raises an eyebrow at that, silently asking why not, but Daniel frowns and shakes his fatherâs
hand off his shoulder. âWe barely started dating, okay? There wasnâtâ¦time.â
âSheâs a good girl,â Kent confirms, looking over his sonâs shoulder out the window. âSheâs loyal, kind,
innocent. But brave, too.â
Kentâs mind wanders for just a moment as he considers his interactions with Fay. Her wide-eyed
innocence, her creamy ivory skin, that long red hair. He was impressed with her performance today,
too. She has grit, he thinks, that she doesnât know she has.
She reminds him, suddenly, of the Sicilian girls he met when he would go back to Italy with his mother
as a boy â delicate by one turn, temperamental the next, at once a dove and a viper.
