Chapter 0019
Fall For My Ex's Mafia Dad
She shrugs, beckoning me over to her. âPersonal shoppers, mostly. Kent likes to look good, but he
doesnât like to go to stores.â I join her at a velvet settee in front of a trifold mirror. âThe rest,â she says,
âareâ¦gifts. Donations.â
I cock my head at her, confused.
She gives me a wink. âYou know. From people who owe him big but donât have the cash.â She wrinkles
her nose and smiles. âThatâs how he got me my Porsche.â
âOh,â I say, my eyes going wide.
âOh, little baby Fay,â she laughs, putting an arm around my shoulders. âYouâre so cute with your little
blushes. Itâs nice to have someone so fresh around.â
I smile at her, biting my lip as she moves over to a pile of silk and satin that she has draped over a
chair.
âNow,â she says, âI picked these out for you, but if you see anything else you like, just tell me.â She
starts to hold up dresses for me.
âUm,â I say, hesitating. âPicked them outâ¦for what?â
âFor the party!â she says, beaming. âDid no one tell you? Tonight! The party so you can meet your
father!â
Fiona smiles at me like Iâm the luckiest girl in the world but I feel my face go as white as a sheet.
Seeing the change in my demeanor, Fiona puts down the dresses and comes over. âAw baby,â she
says soothingly. âToo much? Too soon?â
I take a deep breath. âYeah, I guess. Iâve never met this man â didnât know he was my father until
yesterday. Itâs all just a shock.â
She gives my shoulders a quick squeeze. âWell, nothingâs going to make you feel more confident than
looking absolutely fabulous.â
She hurries back over to the pile of dresses she set aside for me. âFor you,â she says, âI think, this
one.â Her voice is reverent as she holds up a gorgeous velvet gown, midnight blue with gauzy fabric
trailing from the shoulders to create a diaphanous train.
I gasp when I see it, unable to help myself as I move forward to touch the material. As I turn it over in
my hands, I catch a view of the price tag. I blanche and drop the fabric.
âWhat?â she says, peering at me. âI thought you liked it? With that red hair youâll be a masterpiece.â
âFiona,â I say, laughing a little, âthat dress is the same price as a car, and not even a cheap car.â
She shrugs. âSo?â
âItâs justâ¦itâs too extravagant for me!â I say, shaking my head.
âBaby,â she says, coming forward and taking my chin in her hand, a little good-natured pity in her eyes.
âThis isnât extravagant enough for you.â
I blink at her and she turns to hold the dress up so that I can see it against my body in the mirror. âThis
is the stuff that Kent lets me wear, Fay. And Iâm just the goomah â the lady on the side,â she says,
winking at me. I can tell she doesnât feel any shame.
âYou though,â she says. âBaby, youâre royalty in this world. Youâre a princess.â
I stare at myself in the mirror, suddenly worried. Iâm no princess â not in any world â Iâm a just a psych
major â
But as I stare at myself in the mirror, with that dress pressed against me, I have to admitâ¦I look, just a
little bit, like royalty.
âYouâve gotta get used to the luxe life,â she says quietly. âKent told me to dress you in these tonight, but
a girl like you should be wearing couture. To make up for it, though,â her face lights up with excitement,
âKent says I get to pick you out some jewels!â
She squeals, clapping her hands. I laugh as well, unable to help myself â sheâs so infectious.
Ten minutes later, when I see myself in the dress with sapphires draped around around my neck, I
shake my head a little in disbelief.
âThere she is,â Fiona says, her voice awed. âThe future wife of the most powerful heir in the city. Ladies
and Gentlemen,â she says, giving a little bow, âmay I present your future Queen.â
My heart sinks as I look at myself. Who even am I anymore?
