Chapter 0074
Fall For My Ex's Mafia Dad
She nods, understanding. âIâm sure that youâre right.â
He stares off into space for a minute, brooding, but Fay bites her lip, unable to help herself from asking
her next question. Sheâs in a strange mood today, feeling a little impulsive and powerful, having come
out of that basement unscathed. So, she doesnât hold back.
âSo are you likeâ¦seeing anyone?â she asks quietly.
âWhat!?â he says, surprised, and then scowls. âNo, Fay,â he murmurs. âIâm not.â
âWhat about Colin?â she asks, surprised. âThe baristo at the book shop?â
âThat wasâ¦nothing,â he murmurs, embarrassed. âWe were never dating â we just hook up sometimes.â
âOh,â Fay says, resting her chin in her palm and taking another bite of donut. âThatâs disappointing. He
was cute.â
Daniel sends her another little glare and then looks away. Realizing that he wonât hold her gaze, Fay
gasps a little.
âNooo, wait,â she says, giggling. âYouâre lying! You are seeing someone!â She sits up straight then,
thrilled. âDaniel! Tell me!â
âKeep your voice down,â he says, bossy, unable to keep the little smile from the corners of his mouth as
he flings a tiny decorative pillow at her.
âOh my god,â she says, leaning forward and whispering. âCome on, youâre my fiancé. We have no
secrets. You have to tell me everything.â
âSeriously?â he says, raising an eyebrow. âYouâre notâ¦mad at me?â
âDaniel,â she says, leaning forward and putting a hand on his cheek. âWeâre not together. And weâve
been through a lot. Whatever happens with us, Iâm rooting for you. And I hope that you are for me. I
hope that we both find people who love us, under whatever circumstances.â
Daniel traces the rim of his wine glass, considering this. Then, after a moment, he responds. âThank
you, Fay,â he murmurs. âThat might be the kindest thing anyoneâs ever said to me.â
She leans forward and presses a kiss to his brow, not pushing him any further. Heâs confessed enough
today, she thinks. Heâll tell her when sheâs ready.
âCome on,â Fay says, leaning off the edge of the bed to grab the bottle of wine on the floor. âDrink up.
Weâve got nothing else to do today. And Iâm not going downstairs again until weâre sure your dad has
cooled off.â
Daniel toasts her refilled glass and then takes another sip, looking at her closely. âAnd,â he hesitates for
a moment. âYouâre not mad at meâ¦otherwise?â
She frowns at him. âWhat do you mean?â
He looks down at his wine again, ashamed of himself. âFor notâ¦coming downstairs, in the midst of it
all. For notâ¦interrupting. Taking you away. Saving you.â
Fayâs mouth rounds in surprise. She takes a moment to think about it and then blushes, laughing a
little. Actually, sheâs very glad that Daniel hadnât come into the room in the middle of that. What would
he have thought if he had seen â
Frankly, what did she think of it all, all that had happened, the heat between them?
She shakes her head, deciding to mull that over when she had a moment alone. Instead, she turns her
attention back to Daniel.
âActually,â she says, âno. Iâm glad you didnât. Iâm starting to learn that I can handle myself in this world.
Learningâ¦methods. Of managing your father. Ofâ¦figuring out my own power.â
Daniel laughs darkly at this. âDonât ever let my dad hear you say that youâve learned to manage him.â
Fay smirks. Of course, she would never. Unless she really wanted to piss him off, whichâ¦well, which
she might actually enjoy.
Her face grows serious, then. âI wonder, though,â she says quietly. âIf your dad would have liked to
have seen you interrupt.â
Daniel just frowns at her, so she continues.
âWell,â Fay says, looking down into her glass. âI think heâs expressed that he wants you toâ¦learn the
business. Take control. This could have been an opportunity to show him that of what happens to me,
at least, you are in charge.â
Daniel nods contemplatively and Fay is grateful to see that she hasnât hurt his feelings.
âThatâsâ¦an interesting point,â he says, taking a big gulp of his wine. âThatâs definitely some food for
thought.â He looks at her then. âI could start with you,â he says, âto show him that Iâm in control.â
Fay smiles and nods happily at him, agreeing.
But deep down, sheâs starting to figure out the truth:
That secretly? At the heart of it?
She had the control. Every bit of it.
