Chapter 1773 by Marina Vittori
An Understated Dominance
Rufusâs resolute warning cleaved through the air. âIâm well aware of your ties with Ambrose, but todayâs events wonât find an effortless path to absolution.â
Standing unwaveringly beside Rufus, Eloise spoke with resolute conviction, â When both the powerful and the humble defy the law, consequences must be confronted.
âThe Vern and Linden families have perpetrated numerous wrongs and should face severe punishment.â
Visibly angered, Rufus hinted that pleading wouldnât sway him at this moment. Eloise, astute to the gravity of the situation, chose her words judiciously.
âYou know precisely what actions are necessary,â she stated firmly. Rufus nodded and chose to remain in contemplative silence. At that very moment, a guard entered, bowing respectfully. âYour Highness, Mr. Vern has arrived.â
âHmph! Bring him in!â Rufus ordered with an icy demeanor. The guard promptly responded with a curt âyesâ and left.
Shortly after that, the guard silently escorted the compliant Reuben into the room. A subtle unease washed over him as he laid eyes on Eloise and Albert.
Eloise, bearing the title of princess consort, usually refrained from meddling in West Lucoziaâs military affairs.
Albert, known as the Executioner, wielded the power of punishment within the royal enclave and was a figure dreaded by all.
âYour Highness, Iâm at your service,â Reuben greeted him humbly, sensing the ominous atmosphere.
âDo you comprehend why I summoned you here late at night?â Rufus spoke coldly, his expression inscrutable.
âI have no idea. Please enlighten me, Your Highness.â Reuben, now anxious, bowed to show deference.
âSee for yourself!â Rufus didnât elaborate, tossing a letter at Reubenâs feet.
Picking up the missive, Reuben paled upon absorbing its contents. âYour Highness! This is a misunderstanding! My son is good-natured and virtuous. He wouldnât commit such heinous acts!
âGood-natured? Virtuous? Youâve got some nerve saying that.â Rufus slammed the table, his anger palpable.
âYour Highness, I am unsure where you acquired this information, but I assure you, my son is law-abiding. This accusation is a malicious attempt to sow discord!â Reuben passionately defended his son.
âReuben, your deceitful tactics persist. Trying to shift blame with a few words wonât suffice. Do you take me for a fool? âRufus spoke sternly.
âYour Highness, my loyalty to you is unwavering. I wouldnât dare deceive you. Please donât heed the words of the schemers!â Reuben pleaded, genuinely aggrieved.
âSeriously, Reuben? I canât believe youâre still trying to argue. Youâre truly incorrigible!â Rufus scowled.
âLet me shoot it straight-the letter youâre holding? My undercover agent uncovered it through a thorough investigation! No one tipped us off. Iâm fully aware of the crimes your son has committed.â
âWhat?â Reuben was thunderstruck and turned even paler. Assuming a rival had reported them, he hadnât realized they were Rufusâs castle undercover agents.
In this critical moment, there was no room for excuses.
âYour Highness! My sonâs misjudgment stemmed from intoxication-a brief lapse in discernment. I implore you to consider my unwavering loyalty and extend mercy to my son.â Reuben kneeled on the ground, groveling.
âYour family would have already faced extermination if not for your past loyalties.â Rufus abruptly pounded the table, startling Reuben.
