Chapter 1777 by Marina Vittori
An Understated Dominance
Reuben and Ambrose descended into a somber silence. Their heads were bowed, burdened by the weight of guilt. Tears traced down their cheeks.
Along their journey, they succumbed to the temptation of wealth, pleasure, and the heady allure of power.
While manipulating forces and wielding authority, they lost touch with the ideals that once guided them, metamorphosing into the very embodiment of the individuals they once scorned.
Did they harbor regret for their choices? Undoubtedly. Yet, redemption now seemed like an elusive pursuit. Once certain actions were taken, there was no turning back.
âReuben, Ambrose, having committed such grave crimes, how should I deal with you?â Rufus suddenly inquired.
Reuben trembled as he spoke, âI acknowledge my profound guilt and am willing to atone with my life. I only ask Your Highness to spare the Vern family.
âInnocent lives will be spared, but those who have committed severe wrongs shall face death,â Rufus replied without turning around.
âThank you, Your Highness!â Reuben managed a forced smile, bowing respectfully and hitting his head on the floor.
âServing under Your Highness has been an honor. If I could turn back time, I would have strived to live an honorable life.
âYour Highness, take care. I will now seek redemption,â Reuben said, grabbing a guardâs sword and swiftly slashing his own throat.
Blood splattered across the hall as he collapsed, a look of relief on his face. âMr. Vern!â Ambrose exclaimed, shocked by Reubenâs ruthless act.
He never expected such determination -a quick, unhesitant act of self- destruction. Unlike a seasoned soldier, he, a civilian, lacked the resolve to face death in such a manner.
âHe left with dignity.â Rufus sighed, feeling a complex mix of emotions. Losing another of his former subordinates was a painful reminder of the dwindling numbers.
âAmbrose, your turn.â Rufus shifted his gaze to the visibly trembling Ambrose.
âYour Highness, have mercy! Have mercy on me!â Ambrose pleaded, bowing repeatedly.
âIâm old! Also, I only have a few years left. Please spare my life! Iâm willing to resign as governor and donate all my wealth. I only ask for Your Highnessâs mercy beyond the law!â
âEveryone must be accountable for their actions. Those who commit wrongs must face punishment,â Rufus shook his head.
âPrincess! Princess, save me!â Ambrose turned to Eloise, desperately crying.
He went on, âIâve been loyal for years. Please, in the name of our past bonds, spare my life. I promise to serve you wholeheartedly in the future!â
âMr. Linden, itâs futile. Save yourself some dignity. If you donât die, the Linden family wonât survive,â Eloise advised solemnly.
âWhy? What have I done wrong?â Ambrose, his eyes red, shouted in frustration.
He added, âIâve served as an official for over 20 years, toiling day and night. Now that Iâve finally climbed to a high position, why canât I enjoy it?
âThose who died were just commoners! How can they be compared to me? Over these years, West Lucozia wouldnât be as prosperous as it is today without my governance.
âWhy should I be condemned for them? Rufus, have you lost your mind?â
