Chapter 2366
An Understated Dominance
âDustin, I didnât realize you had such hidden talent. Itâs surprising that you could defeat our elites.â Hank studied Dustin for a moment before breaking into a smile.
He continued, âBut I canât blame you. The fault lies with Bill and Jeremiah for not being strong enough. As the saying goes, the victor takes all. Itâs only natural they met such an end due to their lack of skill. Iâm not here tonight to point fingers or hold you accountable.â
âWell, thatâs reassuring.â Dustin breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. â Since youâre not here to cause trouble, whatâs this visit about?â
âHonestly, your performance has caught the attention of the God King. He wants to formally invite you to join the Hall of Gods and help us accomplish our grand vision.â Hank smiled as he extended the invitation.
âJoin the Hall of Gods?â Dustin was taken aback. He said hesitatingly, âMr. Styles, that doesnât seem right. Iâm just a nobody from the mountains. How could I possibly be worthy of joining the Hall of Gods?â
âYouâre being too modest, Dustin,â Hank said, sipping his tea. He smiled and continued, âA genius like you would be more than welcome in the Hall of Gods. I can promise you that if you join us, youâll receive focused training and access to endless resources.â
The Hall of Gods had members from all over the globe. When it came to wealth and resources, they were unmatched, with a seemingly inexhaustible supply. So, Hank came to Dustin brimming with confidence.
âMr. Styles, I appreciate the offer, but Iâm used to my freedom. I donât like being tied down, so I think Iâll have to pass.â Dustin shook his head and declined.
âDustin, donât be so quick to turn me down.â Hank set his teacup down.
He said earnestly, âI can guarantee that if you join the Hall of Gods, I wonât restrict your actions. Youâll be free to do whatever you want without reporting to me. On top of that, Iâll ensure you get the kind of authority and resources that come with being an Oracle Defender.â
âOracle Defender? How esteemed is that position?â Dustin asked curiously.
âItâs a unique position,â Hank explained. âIn Dragonmarsh terms, itâs like being an honored guild elder. Their authority is just a step below the God King. Within the Hall of Gods, theyâre held in high regard by everyone.â
âThat sounds pretty good.â Dustin nodded and smiled. âSo, you mean I donât have to do anything? Just by joining the Hall of Gods, I can gain access to all those treasures and resources?â
âYou could look at it that way, butâ¦â Hank paused before continuing, âWhile being Oracle Defender gives you freedom and authority, there will be moments when youâll need to do â somethingâ for the Hall of Gods. Otherwise, itâs hard to keep respect if you take without giving.â
The Hall of Gods wouldnât keep those who didnât contribute. They wanted benefits and expected everything to run smoothly. What kind of deal was that?
âWhatâs this âsomethingâ youâre talking about? You might as well just say it,â Dustin said impassively. He knew Hank was about to get to the point.
âYouâre probably aware that once this Combat Tournament is over, the Hall of Gods has an important operation lined up. For security reasons, we havenât yet finalized the target or timing of the mission,â Hank said.
He continued, âI wasnât aware of your abilities before, so my arrangements werenât as thorough as they should have been. If possible, Iâd like you to lead this operation.
âIf you succeed, I wonât just make you an Oracle Defender. I could even promote you to the rank of a god and put you on the same level as me.â
âI didnât expect the Hall of Gods to take this operation so seriously. What exactly do you need me to do?â Dustin asked tentatively.
âIf you want to know the details of the operation, youâll need to take this first. âHank took a vial from his pocket and placed it on the table.
âThis isâ¦â Dustin looked a bit confused.
âPoison,â Hank answered bluntly.
Seeing Dustinâs frown, he quickly added, âItâs not that I donât trust you. But the Hall of Gods has its own rules. To prevent any secrets from leaking and jeopardizing the mission, everyone has to take the poison, myself included. No exceptions.â
âThat ruthless?â Dustin frowned.
âYes, but donât worry. Once you complete the mission, the God King will give you the antidote,â Hank reassured with a smile.
âAnd if I donât?â Dustin suddenly countered.
That question caused Hank to pause briefly, but quickly regained his composure. He smiled and said, âDonât worry. The Hall of Gods has planned everything down to the smallest detail. If you follow the steps, there wonât be a problem.â
Dustin considered his options for a moment before shaking his head. âMr. Styles, while the offer from the Hall of Gods is certainly tempting, my own safety matters more. I wonât let my life be held in someone elseâs hands, so Iâll have to decline your offer.â
He wasnât afraid of the poison. In fact, this was his tactic to build trust with the Hall of Gods. After all, a reasonable person would likely hesitate at such a proposition. It might raise suspicions if he showed too much eagerness to risk his life.
As expected, Hank wasnât upset by Sebastianâs response. Instead, he smiled even brighter. Hank would have questioned his intentions if Dustin had jumped at the offer. Now, he found himself trusting Dustin even more.
