Chapter 2470
An Understated Dominance
Ten minutes later, Warrick was escorted out of Room A1 again.
Axelâs demeanor had completely changed since their first meeting, and he had become unusually warm.
âSir Prescott, Lord Austin has concluded the investigation. It turns out this matter has nothing to do with you. We made a mistake earlier, and I apologize for any offense caused.â He smiled apologetically and spoke with a humble tone.
âHm?â Seeing the fawning expression on Axelâs face, Warrick raised an eyebrow and looked surprised.
Just moments ago, the two sides had been at each otherâs throats. What had caused such a sudden change?
âDid you really investigate it thoroughly?â Warrick asked tentatively.
âOf course! According to our findings, Jovianâs disappearance was the result of a personal vendetta from his enemies in Oakvale,â Axel said with a straight face.
He continued, âHe was a tyrant and always stirring up trouble everywhere he went. He got what was coming to him. Lord Austin only launched the investigation to give the Ballard family some closure. Since this was a personal vendetta, it has nothing to do with us here in West Lucozia.â
âI seeâ¦â Warrick shot a meaningful glance at the people around him.
He thought to himself, âIf I hadnât personally disposed of the body, I mightâve actually believed your lies.â
âSir Prescott, this was our oversight. Youâve been put in a difficult position, and to make it up to you, Lord Austin has prepared a banquet in your honor at the castle. Heâd like to invite you to dine with him as an apology,â Axel said with a grin.
âMr. Cruz, youâre being too modest. Itâs only natural that I cooperated with the investigation at Lord Austinâs request. As for apologies, I donât deserve any,â
Warrick replied coolly.
The sudden change in Austinâs attitude left him uneasy. What exactly was Austin up to? One moment he was using threats and persuasion and the next second, he was hosting a banquet. Was there another scheme at play?
âLord Austin clearly feels guilty. Itâs just a meal, after all. Surely, you wonât refuse His Highnessâ hospitality, right?â Axel said with a sly smile.
âWellâ¦â Warrick hesitated for a moment, then nodded. âSince His Highness insists, it would be rude of me to refuse.â
âSir Prescott, this way please.â Axel smiled faintly and enthusiastically led him away.
As they left, Percival happened to witness the scene. Seeing Warrickâs commanding presence and Axelâs overly warm demeanor, Percival frowned and unease twisted in his gut.
âExcuse me, was that Mr. Prescott who just passed by?â Percival asked the royal guard beside him.
âYes, sir,â the guard on the left replied. â The enforcement team is working to uncover the real murderer. Since Sir Prescott provided valuable intel, Lord Austin is hosting a grand banquet in his honor tonight.â
âIs that so?â Percivalâs expression changed slightly, and his unease grew
âShut up! Who permitted you to talk about this?â the guard on the right snapped. âIf Lord Austin hears about this, youâd better pray he doesnât make an example out of you.â
The guard on the left immediately lowered his head and fell silent.
Percival observed their exchange, and his heart felt heavy with unease.
Jovianâs death was obviously linked to Warrick, so why was he rewarded instead? What the hell was going on?
With a troubled mind, Percival followed the guards to the meeting room.
Austin sat at the center with an indifferent expression. Every movement carried an undeniable air of authority.
âYour Highness⦠Iâm honored to stand before you today,â Percival greeted respectfully as he entered.
âMr. Wentworth, do you know why youâre here?â Austin asked coolly.
âI donât, Your Highness. Please enlighten me.â Percival lowered his head slightly, an uneasy feeling creeping over him.
âYou truly donât know? Or are you just playing dumb?â Austinâs expression was stone-cold.
âI-â
Percival was about to speak when a loud crash suddenly echoed through the room.
A teacup shattered at his feet, and porcelain pieces along with tea splashed across his legs. He jolted in shock and looked up-only to meet Austinâs icy, murderous gaze.
âMr. Wentworth!â Austin barked. âYou better tell me the truth. If you lie, donât expect me to show mercy.â
Percival broke into a cold sweat, and he said nervously, âYour Highness, please calm your anger. Iâm old, and my memory isnât what it used to be. If Iâve offended you in any way, I beg your forgiveness.â
âEnough of your excuses!â
Austin stormed forward and glared down at Percival. He said coldly, âSomeone came forward with a signed statement and accused you of killing Jovian and getting rid of the body. How dare you lay a hand on my guest? Do you have a death wish?â
At those words, Percivalâs face went pale with fear. He dropped to his knees with a loud thud.
âYour Highness, Iâm innocent. This is a false accusation.â Percival had a sorrowful expression on his face as he repeatedly cried out in protest.
âIn my decades of service, I may have accepted bribes, but Iâve never killed anyone. Someone must be framing me. Please look into this, Your Highness.â
He repeatedly prostrated, his head banging against the ground. Each impact echoed loudly, and his forehead began to bleed, blood trickling down his face.
