Chapter 1402
When Love Comes Late
She patted her chest, still shaken.
Noticing Bennyâs silence, Flossie turned to him, finding his face grim.
Remembering Bennyâs meeting tonight, Flossie asked carefully, âYou came for your meeting? Howâd it go?â
Benny grunted, hitting the gas.
âTotal disaster.
â
A hint of worry appeared in Flossieâs eyes.
She knew that this cooperation was very important to Benny.
She was afraid that he would flip if things went south.
âUm⦠Got any backup plan?â Flossie whispered.
Benny stared ahead, fretting.
âI missed a big shot.
Iâll have to wait for another.
But it may never come.
â
Flossie wanted to console him but was at a loss.
After a beat, she offered, âChin up.
Youâll nail it next time.
â
She was clueless about Bennyâs scheme, so she left it at that.
Benny stayed quiet.
They rode home in silence.
Pulling up, Benny said, âYou head in.
I need a smoke.
â
Flossie figured he needed a breather, so she exited the car.
Once she left, Benny lit up.
Just then, his phone buzzed.
It was Carl.
Annoyed, Carl barked, âMy guyâs busted.
He might squeal!â
Benny shrugged, unfazed.
âHeâs a nobody.
Weâll bide our time.
â
Taking a drag, he mused, âAt least we shook up Matthewâs missus.
That will send a message.
Carl inquired, âWhoâs the lady with Stella?â
Benny scowled.
âWhy?â
Carl grinned.
âSheâs got my interest.
Bring her next time we chat.
â
Benny hung up, wearing a gloomy expression.
He thumped the steering wheel in frustration.
Meanwhile, Stellaâs attacker got nabbed and spilled the beans-he was working for Carl.
