Chapter 1537
When Love Comes Late
Suddenly, her phone started ringing.
Haley fumbled through Stellaâs bag, pulling out the phone and glancing at the screen.
Matthewâs name sent a jolt of nervousness through her.
Taking a deep breath to steady herself, Haley answered, âMatthewâ¦â
âWhy are you answering Stellaâs phone? Where is she?â Matthew asked sternly.
Suddenly, he heard Stellaâs cry in the background.
Matthew tensed.
âWhat happened? Put Stella on!â
âStella hurt her hand by the cafe door.
Itâs bleeding a lot,â Haley chocked out.
Matthewâs heart lurched.
He hadnât expected Stella to get hurt while he was away for a moment.
âDid you call an ambulance? Iâm on my way.
â
Just then, the wail of a siren filled the air.
âThe ambulance is here,â Haley said hurriedly.
âIâm taking her to the hospital.
â
The call ended abruptly.
Haley stowed the phone and helped the paramedics get Stella into the ambulance.
Inside the ambulance, a doctor tended to Stellaâs wound.
Initially, Haley feigned excessive concern.
But as Stella grew distracted, she fell silent, observing quietly.
Slipping her phone out of sight, Haley sent a quick message to Kristian.
âItâs done.
Your turn.
â
At the hospital, Stella was whisked into a treatment room, Haley following close behind.
The doctor examined the X-rays, then spoke calmly.
âTwo broken fingers.
Theyâll need
to be immobilized for at least a month.
â
Stellaâs face paled.
âHow long before I can draw again?â she asked anxiously.
The doctor sighed.
âDrawing? You need at least two months of complete rest.
No movement.
Otherwise, you risk permanent damage.
â
Stellaâs eyes welled up.
Her expression grew dejected.
The door suddenly burst open, revealing a frantic Matthew.
His eyes fell on Stellaâs hand, encased in a bulky bandage, and his heart sank.
Anger flared in him.
âWho did this to her?â he demanded, his gaze flashing towards Haley.
Flustered by his outburst, Haley stammered, âI-I donât know.
I was inside the cafe and didnât see what happened.
Stella was already hurt when I came out.
â
Matthewâs scowl remained firmly in place.
