Chapter 1620
When Love Comes Late
Stella went upstairs, intending to share the good news with Matthew.
Just as she was about to open the study door, she heard Matthewâs voice inside, talking on the phone.
Stella paused, deciding to wait until he finished.
But as she turned to leave, she caught the name âDevyn.
â
âThank you, Nikolai.
If this involves Devyn, Iâll deal with her strictly.
â
Stella immediately entered and asked Matthew, âWhatâs going on with Devyn? What is she involved with?â
Matthew was taken by surprise when Stella came in unexpectedly.
Quickly, he bid farewell to Nikolai and ended the call in a rush.
Observing his rush, Stella grew more curious.
Approaching him, she asked, âWhatâs going on? What did Devyn do?â
Realizing he couldnât keep it from her any longer, Matthew motioned for Stella to take a seat and shared his suspicions about Devyn.

âNo way!â Stella firmly objected to his suspicions.
âYouâre jumping to conclusions.
Devyn wouldnât do something like that.
â
Matthew asked, âWhy are you so certain?â
Stella promptly responded, âBack when I worked at Prosperity Group, every time I was in trouble, she stood up for me without hesitation.
Plus, sheâs been putting in a lot of effort this time.
I really donât think thereâs anything fishy about her.
â
After a momentâs pause, she recalled that Devyn had indeed seemed different lately, but she remained convinced that Devyn wouldnât harm her.
Matthew stayed silent.
He turned on the computer, located a file, and rotated the screen toward Stella.
âTake a look at this.
â
It was all about what went down with Devyn in the past year.
After reading it, Stella asked, âYou investigated her? But it doesnât prove anything.
â
Matthew thought for a moment.
âYou know, Devynâs strapped for cash.
Her mom needs a kidney transplant, and her two brothers are into gambling.
With all that stress, she might do some questionable stuff.
â
Stella shook her head, refusing to believe him.
âNo way.
Sheâs got dreams and integrity.
Sheâd never pull something like that.
â
Stella shut off the computer screen and said earnestly, âQuit doubting her.
Sheâs striving hard to better her life.
Plus, we didnât witness the work she handed to Bella, so we lack concrete evidence.
â
After speaking, she stood up and gave Matthew a serious look.
âI failed, and Iâm sad, but I canât put the blame on others for my failure.
â
Matthew placed his hands on her shoulders to calm her down.
He said calmly, âI know youâre reluctant to doubt her, and I also understand that I lack solid proof, so I had Nikolai test her.
Now itâs up to you whether you want to test your friendship with her or not.
â
