Chapter 1622
When Love Comes Late
Stella responded with a smile.
Even though she had rehearsed what to say at home, Devyn still felt a twinge of guilt when she looked at Stella.
However, she quickly hid her feelings.
Handing over the menu, she told Stella, âFeel free to order whatever youâd like.
â
Stella took the menu and thought about Devynâs recent struggles that Matthew had found out about.
Deciding to be cautious, she chose some of the less expensive dishes.
During the meal, Devyn brought up some light gossip, which helped Stella relax a bit, making her think that maybe Matthew was just being overly cautious.
Halfway through their dinner, Devyn set her utensils down and said in a troubled tone, âActually, thereâs another reason I wanted to meet up today, aside from celebrating.
â
Stella felt her heart skip but hid it well, casually asking, âWhatâs going on?â
âJust thisâ¦â Pulling out the design draft, Devyn mentioned, âEver heard of the famous designer Nikolai? Heâs asked me to design a wedding dress for Christie.
Iâve sketched out a draft, but itâs not quite there yet.
Could you take a look? Iâm really keen to nail this.
â
Devyn acted just as Matthew had predicted.
Stella, feeling a twinge of disappointment, accepted the tablet to review the design.
It was the same one sheâd recently seen.
Regaining her composure, she inquired gently, âHave you considered the main color for the dress?â
âWhite, of course,â Devyn answered, as if it was obvious for a wedding dress.
Stellaâs response was simple but firm.
âNo.
â
Devyn was caught off guard.
Stella looked up, her gaze intense with passion for design.
âChristie should wear black.
Remember her as the Night Duchess in one of her performances? The black costume was a hit, and sheâs openly expressed her love for black.
â
With a serious tone, Stella fixed her eyes on Devyn and added, âIf you havenât done your homework on her preferences, how can you design the perfect dress?â
Stellaâs serious vibe scared Devyn at first.
But then, with an awkward smile, Devyn admitted, âYeah, I shouldâve done my homework.
My bad.
â
Seeing Devynâs face fall when she messed up made Stella feel kind of bad.
Then, Stella softened up a bit.
âNikolaiâs got a big reputation in the design world.
Heâs always got high standards.
If youâre taking his gig, you will have to step it up.
Research is key.
Donât rush it.
â
Devyn couldnât even meet Stellaâs eyes; she felt so embarrassed.
She owned up to getting carried away when Nikolai offered her the job.
After a long silence, she finally nodded.
âGot it.
Iâll do better next time.
â
Stella eased off the tough love.
