Chapter 1631
When Love Comes Late
The echoing slam jolted Devyn back to reality.
She gazed at the closed door with tears streaming down her cheeks.
Unable to stand, her legs gave out and she collapsed.
Todayâs events marked the end of her friendship with Stella.
Since she decided to copy Stellaâs design, she knew this day would come.
But facing it, she realized how painful it was to lose a friend over a mistake.
Yet, she didnât regret it.
Family safety mattered more than Stellaâs friendship.
In the evening, Devyn visited Maureen in the hospital.
Maureen was improving and awake, though sadness lingered in her eyes.
Noticing her momâs distress, Devyn asked gently, âMom, whatâs on your mind?â
Maureen fretted about the medical bills.
âIt must be costly.
If I canât get better, weâllâ¦â
Devyn reassured her, âDonât worry, Mom.
Iâve made money from the online shop.
We can handle the bills.
Just focus on getting better.
â
Relieved, Maureen sighed.
âThank goodness.
Itâs all my fault.
You must have suffered a lot for my sake.
â
Devyn choked back tears, denying, âNo, donât blame yourself.
Your health is what matters most.
â
They talked until Maureen dozed off and then Devyn settled the bills.
But the nurse stopped her.
âThe bills are paid and thereâs extra.
Someone took care of it.
â
Who could have helped her?
Puzzled, Devyn asked, âWho?â
âSheâs a real looker,â the nurse mused, pondering for a second before a lightbulb lit up in her mind.
âOh, she left you a note.
â
Devyn wrinkled her brow and grabbed the note from the nurseâs grip.
Stellaâs scribble was unmistakable.
In neat writing, it said, âDevyn, I know youâre in a jam, and I hope this bit helps.
But as a friend, I wish youâd come clean about whatâs been going down.
â
Devyn stared at the beautifully written note with tears trickling down her face.
She understood that Stella was reaching out, trying to lend a hand.
But Devyn was boxed in.
If she didnât play ball with that woman, her mom wouldnât get that kidney.
