Chapter 1650
When Love Comes Late
Devyn was seething as she thought about the person causing her so much distress.
âBack then, I was being threatened by someone.
She seemed to know everything about me.
First, she targeted my brothers, and then my mother ended up in the emergency room because of her actions.
She was too powerful for me to confront.
So, I did what she told me toâ¦â
Devyn bowed her head, tears rolling down her cheeks, her voice laden with remorse.
âI hope you can forgive me.
Please, give me another chance.
I swear I wonât do it again.
â
Stella realized someone had been directing Devynâs actions.
She narrowed her eyes and asked, âWho threatened you?â
Caught off guard by Stellaâs question, Devyn was initially stunned, and then she shook her head.
âI donât know.
She was always careful.
She called me from a different number each time and used a voice changer.
I think she might be a woman.
â
A woman?
Stella pondered deeply.
Who would go to such lengths to manipulate Devyn into conspiring against her?
After a long moment of thought and coming up with nothing, Stella finally said, âIâm aware that your mother needs a kidney transplant.
Donât worry too much.
Iâll find a way to help.
â
Devyn quickly waved her hand and said, âNo, I donât deserve your help.
Iâm not worthy.
â
âYou donât need to refuse my help.
â Staring at her worn-out face, Stella said without emotion, âThis is the last time Iâm helping you as a friend.
Think of it as a thank-you for the times you supported me back at the company.
But after this, weâre no longer friends.
You betrayed me.
You didnât have to do that, regardless of the reason.
â
Devynâs heart sank upon hearing this.
She struggled for words before finally calling out, âStella, Iâm sorry, I really am.
â
Stella gave a bitter smile and replied, âIâve given you several chances, and you ignored all of them.
If you had another option, you wouldnât be here apologizing to me.
â
Devyn sat still, saying nothing.
Stella grabbed her bag and headed toward the door.
As she reached it, she paused and turned back to Devyn.
âTake care of yourself.
From now on, youâre just a stranger to me.
â
Stella left without a backward glance.
As she stepped out of the club, a lump formed in her throat.
She took a deep breath and climbed into the car where Matthew was waiting.
He noticed her reddened eyes and gently dabbed away her tears.
Leaning on Matthewâs shoulder, Stella said, her voice filled with distress, âI never imagined Iâd cut ties with Devyn.
I donât really have many friends in Seamarsh, and she was one of the few.
I was so glad when she reconnected with me, but now, itâs like weâre strangers.
â
Matthew soothed her by stroking her hair.
âIâve reached out to some doctors.
Theyâll let Devyn know if they find a kidney donor.
â
âThanks for being so understanding,â Stella murmured, her mood somber.
She averted her gaze, her voice tinged with disappointment.
âI get that she had her reasons, but I still canât forgive her for betraying me.
Does that make me a bad person?â
Matthew ki*sed her forehead, offering reassurance.
âDonât worry too much.
Youâve handled things well.
Everything will turn out okay.
â
