After a moment of disappointment, he collected himself.
âSince you see me as a friend, would you mind hearing some friendly advice?â
Flossieâs eyes widened in surprise for a moment, and then she nodded in agreement.
Colinâs tone was serious, but his eyes held compassion.
âYouâre a wonderful person.
Iâll always want to protect you.
I know what I just said mightâve caught you off guard, but trust me, those words stand true.
If you ever feel down, remember you can always lean on me.
â
Flossieâs heart softened after Colinâs confession.
Everyone craved protection, and Colin had been a constant presence during her recent struggles.
However, love couldnât be forced.
Taking the food he brought, she took a few sips of the oatmeal milk.
âThank you, Colin,â she said.
âI truly appreciate everything youâve done lately.
I wonât forget your kindness.
When the time comes, Iâll repay everything you did.
â
Colin just shrugged; he wasnât looking for repayment.
But anyway, he felt relieved to see her eat.
He smiled.
âDonât mention it.
Just seeing you happy makes me happy.
â
Silence settled in the ward after his words, broken only by the soft sounds of Flossie eating.
The bowl of oatmeal milk was quickly emptied.
Putting it down, Flossie had another question.
Hesitantly, she asked, âWere you familiar with Jessica?â
A flicker crossed Colinâs eyes before he finally confessed, âWe had a complicated relationship for a while.
â
Flossieâs eyes widened in surprise.
Colin looked down, unable to meet her gaze.
âAfter you got hurt, Jessica confronted me.
I learned she was the one behind your injuries, so I terminated her contracts.
â
âDo you know how she died?â Flossie asked, calming herself.
Colin shook his head.
âI never wanted that.
I had someone investigate after it happened, and they ruled it an accident.
Apparently, she fell.
â
âAn accident?â Flossie frowned.
This reason was not very convincing.
âI questioned the results too, but the police closed the case.
â Colin shrugged.
Flossie remained silent, lost in thought.
In reality, she was a bit relieved.
At the very least, some of what Edmund said was true.
Colin disposed of the empty bowl and returned to her bedside.
âWhy are you suddenly asking about her? Is everything okay?â
Flossie snapped back to the present and shook her head.
âJust curious⦠I feel somethingâs off about her death.
