Chapter 1706
When Love Comes Late
Order was restored on the spot.
Stella sent Clint to rest.
As she exited the room, her phone rang.
It was Cordell.
Stellaâs thoughts lingered on Doreen.
She quickly answered the call, inquiring, âHow is Doreen doing?â
âShe passed out from low blood sugar and exhaustion.
She hasnât come to yet,â Cordell replied.
Stella let out a relieved sigh and thanked him earnestly.
âThank you, Cordell.
My grandpa has arrived since the wedding is tomorrow.
Iâm swamped.
Could you please look after Doreen for me?â
âMy pleasure,â Cordell responded softly.
After thanking him once more, Stella was about to end the call when Cordell spoke up again, sounding unsure.
âDo you know anything about Doreenâs family?â
Stella paused, surprised by the sudden question.
Nonetheless, she answered honestly, âIâm not sure of the specifics.
She just finished college this year.
Sheâs innocent and diligentâ¦â
Curious, she added, âWhy do you ask?â
Cordell hesitated before saying, âEarlier during the examination, I noticed some scars on her body that looked like they were caused deliberately.
I think she might have been abused by her family.
â
Stella was taken aback.
She always thought of Doreen as cheerful and upbeat.
It was difficult to imagine her being unhappy.
She composed herself, her expression turning serious.
âThanks for letting me know.
Iâll keep a closer eye on her.
But letâs not bring this up with Doreen for now.
â
If the abuse allegations were true, and Doreen was concealing them well, she probably didnât want others to find out.
Her self-esteem needed to be safeguarded in such a scenario.
âI understand,â Cordell replied before hanging up the phone.
He peered through the wardâs glass, seeing Doreen still unconscious and pale.
Suddenly, he recalled the first time he met her.
Despite the tension in her eyes, her smile radiated like a bright, energetic sun.
A fleeting, strange emotion passed through him.
Turning away, Cordell approached the nursing station.
âPlease keep an eye on the patient in bed 302 for me.
Call me if anything comes up.
â
That night, Miley threw a special party just for Stella.
She led her to a private room.
Miley was particularly cheerful that day, chatting more than usual.
As they walked, she grumbled about Flossieâs absence.
âThis party is a big deal.
Itâs your last before you get married.
But Flossie bailed because she wasnât feeling well.
She took some medicine and hit the sack early to be okay for tomorrow.
â
Stella smiled, brushing it off.
âItâs alright.
Let her rest.
Weâll catch up with her tomorrow.
â
Although Miley was initially upset about Flossie missing out, she quickly let it go.
âTonight, youâre the star, Stella.
Thatâs all that matters.
â
Inside the private room, Juliette had already arrived.
Being pregnant, she stuck to soda while mingling with Stella and the others.
