Chapter 1757
When Love Comes Late
Flossie pleaded earnestly.
She turned to Matthew and continued, âMr.
Clark, everything Iâve said is the truth.
I never intended to cause you harm! Stella and I are friends.
The chaos at the wedding wasnât something I foresaw.
I really didnât know he had planned that! Neville scoffed, âThe truth of the matter is known only to you and Benny.
Now youâre the only one here.
How can we know if youâre telling the truth?â
Flossie realized that no matter what she said, they wouldnât forgive her.
Struggling against Nevilleâs skepticism, she instinctively defended herself, âNo, I truly didnât knowâ¦â
âEnough.
â Matthew cut her off, tired of the pointless explanations.
He was still distressed over the disrupted wedding he had organized for Stella and the pain she had suffered while he was in a coma.
He hadnât directed his frustration at Flossie, believing it unjust to blame a woman, but his patience was wearing thin.
âIf you have something to say, say it quickly.
Donât waste our time.
â
Neville remained skeptical of Flossie.
âWhat more can she offer? She wants us to forgive her boyfriend and then fall into another one of their traps.
We were lucky this time.
Do you want Stella to live in fear again?â
Matthewâs expression darkened upon hearing this.
âI wonât help him,â Flossie declared somberly.
âWhy should we believe you?â Neville challenged directly.
With a heavy heart, Flossie closed her eyes and her voice shook as she confessed, âMy baby is gone.
â
Her revelation silenced Neville, sparking a flurry of thoughts.
Noticing the shift in Flossieâs attitude toward Benny, Neville ventured cautiously, âDid Benny have something to do with it?â
Flossie kept her eyes shut, overwhelmed with sorrow, and did not respond.
When she opened her eyes, she looked resolutely at Matthew.
âI want to make amends for my past actions.
I hope youâll give me a chance.
â
Seeing Matthewâs nonresponse, Flossie sensed a glimmer of opportunity.
âIâm the only one who can get close to Benny.
Working with me is your fastest way to bring him down.
â
Matthew remained silent, his expression unreadable.
Flossie paused, gathering her thoughts, and then added, âSince youâve chosen to keep your recovery a secret, I assume youâre planning a surprise move, right?â
Under Matthewâs intense gaze, Flossie felt her nerves, her palms sweating, but she maintained eye contact.
Showing any sign of weakness might convince him she was dishonest, not genuinely offering help.
This was her last chance.
Matthew weighed her sincerity, mindful of past deceptions and determined to prevent further worry for Stella.
After a long silence, he posed a stark question.
âWhat I need is for Benny to be completely out of the picture.
Can you handle that?â
