Chapter 1775
When Love Comes Late
He had a gut feeling that tonight would be the climax of their long, twisted tale.
Sure enough, Matthew came alone, just as Benny had anticipated.
His concern for Waldo and Lucia had made him cautious, and his solitude satisfied Benny immensely.
He loaded his gun, the click echoing in the night, and dialed Matthewâs number.
When Matthew answered, Benny barked, âGet out of the car!â
He hung up immediately, and then pointed his gun in the direction of Matthew.
Matthew complied, stepping out of the vehicle.
Benny aimed, years of festering resentment boiling over.
He squeezed the trigger repeatedly, each shot a cathartic release of his pent-up rage.
His only thought was to end Matthewâs life!
This vendetta had consumed him, becoming a dark obsession that gnawed at his soul.
Gunfire shattered the night.
Matthew, reacting quickly, dived back into the car, but not before a bullet found its mark in his chest.
He staggered momentarily, but the bulletproof vest he wore absorbed the impact, sparing his life.
Despite the pain from a graze on his arm from another bullet as he got in, Matthew slammed the car door shut.
Bennyâs remaining bullets ricocheted off the bulletproof vehicle, sparking against the metal but causing no harm.
âf@ck!â Benny cursed, realizing Matthew had been prepared.
Furious, he reached for a more powerful sniper rifle, but just as he was about to switch weapons, a bullet tore through his shoulder.
His hand trembled, and the rifle slipped from his grasp, clattering to the ground.
Benny looked toward the source of the shot, cursing himself for not foreseeing Matthewâs snipers.
He had revealed his position when he fired at Matthew, and now Matthewâs men reacted accordingly.
Bennyâs desire to kill Matthew led to his own carelessness.
And he didnât expect Matthew would use himself as bait.
Bennyâs eyes reddened with rage.
He couldnât remain in this exposed position.
Struggling to control his fury, he supported his injured shoulder and called Edmund, his voice seething with anger.
âGet your helicopter to the Seamarsh Cliff immediately.
Donât waste a second, or Iâll have someone kill Flossie!â
Thankfully, he still had leverage; it wasnât a total loss.
He needed to escape now or face certain death.
As long as he lived, he would settle the score with Matthew eventually.
