Chapter 1836
When Love Comes Late
The following day, not long after he arrived at the office, Fernando knocked on his door.
Standing there, Fernando announced, âMr.
Clark, Elizabeth wants to see you.
â
With Matthewâs permission, Fernando led Elizabeth into the office.
He then closed the door and left them alone.
Matthew offered her no greeting, his gaze cold and distant.
He didnât invite her to sit.
Undeterred by his indifference, Elizabeth launched into a carefully worded explanation.
âI heard rumors about Stella in Dorburn.
The situationâs gotten out of hand.
I wanted to help, but people are quick to believe rumors.
â
Matthew cut her off, impatience lacing his voice.
âGet to the point.
My time is valuable.
Speak your mind.
â
Her frustration bubbled at his interruption, but she forced it down.
Lowering her voice, she said, âI understand the importance of the Dorburn market.
The online negativity must be hurting your customer base there.
So, I used my connections to help you get a few orders.
â
She extended a cooperation contract toward him.
Sheâd expected he wouldnât accept it, so she had prepared a persuasive speech, but Matthew simply took the document without a word.
A flicker of pride crossed Elizabethâs face.
Matthew skimmed the contract, seemingly engrossed.
Her happiness bloomed.
She kept her voice bashful.
âSecuring these new clients took considerable effort.
Theyâre willing to trust Prosperity Group, on my account.
But thereâs a condition⦠We need to replace Stella as project manager.
â
She harbored no doubt that Matthew would agree.
After all, he was a businessman.
He wouldnât refuse such a clear advantage.
Placing the contract back on the desk, Matthew met her gaze.
âWhy are you doing this for my company, Elizabeth? We have no personal connection.
I need to know your motives.
â
The question caught her off guard.
Sheâd convinced herself he understood her intentions.
Now, faced with his directness, she was at a loss for words.
She stammered, âI justâ¦â
Before she could fabricate an answer, Matthewâs voice cut through the tension.
âRegardless of your motivations, remember: Stella is my wife.
This project is hers.
No financial gain could outweigh her well-being.
You donât need to worry about the Dorburn losses.
I can handle them.
â
He discarded the contract like unwanted trash.
Elizabethâs heart clenched.
The depth of Matthewâs loyalty to Stella sparked a surge of anger within her.
Elizabeth took a deep breath, trying to stay calm.
âThe negative posts and canceled orders might not cripple Prosperity Group.
But the losses are significant.
Now, thereâs a fantastic opportunity right in front of you.
Are you sure you want to pass on it?â
âWhat I do isnât your concern.
If thereâs nothing else, please head out,â he replied politely, but his tone was firm.
His voice turned colder.
âNow that you have a boyfriend, just behave yourself.
You donât want everything youâve done exposed, do you?â
