Chapter 1849
When Love Comes Late
Elizabeth harbored doubts, but she feared annoying Bella with too many inquiries.
âItâs good to get some fresh air, but youâve been unwell lately.
You should remember to take me along next time, so I wonât worry,â she suggested.
Determined not to let her guard down, Elizabeth resolved to remain vigilant and keep a watchful eye on Bella in the future.
Bella acknowledged Elizabethâs concern before cautiously broaching the topic of her mental state.
âIâve been feeling mentally unstable lately.
Iâm constantly worried that something might be wrong.
How about we go to the hospital for a check-up?â she proposed tentatively.
However, Elizabeth vehemently opposed the idea.
âWhy would you want to go to the hospital? Itâs not a pleasant place,â she retorted abruptly, realizing her tone was too harsh.
Awkwardly, she clarified, âI mean, youâre perfectly healthy.
Why bother going to the hospital? The doctor mentioned that your recent issues are likely due to stress and lack of sleep.
You should focus on reducing stress and getting more rest.
â
As Bella remained silent, Elizabeth rushed to elaborate further, âAnd you know how fragile you are, Mom.
Hospitals are teeming with bacteria, so itâs best to avoid unnecessary visits.
â
However, Bellaâs suspicions grew with each word Elizabeth uttered, though she kept her doubts to herself.
âMaybe youâre right.
Iâll focus on getting some rest,â Bella conceded, masking her skepticism.
Relieved, Elizabeth affirmed, âExactly.
I wouldnât want to do anything to harm you.
â
Unaware of Bellaâs doubt and disappointment, Elizabeth assumed she had successfully allayed her concerns.
Just as Elizabeth relaxed, Bella interjected, âThe medication Iâve been taking has run out.
â
âAlready? Didnât I just give you a new bottle?â Elizabeth questioned instinctively.
Bella explained matter-of-factly, âYes, but my headaches have been worsening lately.
And the doctor increased the dosage a few days ago, right? So, I finished it sooner than expected.
â
Elizabeth realized she had been preoccupied with Stella and hadnât kept track of Bellaâs medication.
âI understand.
Iâll arrange for more from the doctor,â she offered promptly.
Bella declined without hesitation.
âNo.
Increasing the dosage hasnât been effective.
Ask our family doctor to come to Seamarsh and assess my condition.
Perhaps a different medication is needed.
â
Elizabeth felt jittery.
She glanced at Bellaâs face without realizing it, yet she couldnât detect anything out of the ordinary.
âYou might want to give it more time.
Sometimes, it can take a while for the medication to work,â Elizabeth said, encouraging Bella to keep using the medicine.
Bella remained firm, stating, âI understand my health condition.
The medicine isnât helping.
Iâve been on it for quite some time, and itâs not worth continuing.
â
She fixed her gaze on Elizabeth and asked, âArenât you eager for my quick recovery?â
Elizabeth chuckled awkwardly.
âOf course Iâmâ¦â
Seeing Bellaâs slight displeasure, she hastened to say, âNo one desires your well-being more than I do.
I wish for you to remain healthy and be by my side.
â
Nonetheless, Bellaâs expression remained unchanged even after Elizabeth spoke.
Elizabeth conceded, âIf you believe consulting the family doctor is best, Iâll contact him immediately.
â
Bella nodded and said, âPlease reach out to him quickly.
Iâm feeling a bit fatigued.
Iâll head to bed now.
â
