Chapter 2209
When Love Comes Late
A moment later, the maid stepped in, gently pushing Lindsayâs wheelchair ahead of her.
Lindsay had flowers cradled in her arms.
As she entered, she placed the flowers on the desk with a bright smile.
âEver since I got back, Iâve been looking for a chance to visit your studio.
But I kept getting sidetracked until now.
â
As soon as Doreen caught sight of Lindsay, the woman rumored to be entangled with Matthew, her instincts sharpened, and she became exceedingly vigilant.
Yet, her guard faltered momentarily when she noticed Lindsay confined to a wheelchair, perplexing her with the reason for her visit.
Stella, with a discerning glance, perceived Lindsayâs intentions were far from innocent.
She didnât give Lindsay a response, instead addressing Doreen crisply.
âYou may step out.
â
Doreen, though puzzled, did not question further.
She nodded and withdrew from the room, Lindsay exchanged a telling glance with the maid, signaling her exit as well.
In the blink of an eye, the office held only Lindsay and Stella.
Despite her gentle demeanor, Lindsayâs presence was charged with tension.
âItâs my first time here,â she said softly, clutching the bouquet.
âI wasnât sure what to bring, so I chose these flowers.
â
Stella, unresponsive to Lindsayâs gesture and unmoved by the floral peace offering, fixed her with a stern gaze.
âWhat are you doing here?â
She was certain Lindsayâs visit was not to tender an apology for last nightâs debacle-nor did she desire such a disingenuous expression of regret.
Bunny Bookery
Lindsay met Stellaâs gaze squarely, neither faltering nor replying immediately.
The air thickened as they locked eyes, an unspoken standoff lingering between them.
Finally breaking the silence with a smile, Lindsay ventured, âYou know what? I genuinely wanted to be your friend when I returned.
If only you werenât Mrs.
Clarkâ¦â
Stella cut her off, her voice devoid of emotion.
âSpare me your pointless words.
If this is about Matthew, then you have nothing I care to hear.
â
Unruffled by Stellaâs cold dismissal, Lindsay adopted a regretful expression and sighed.
âYouâve been married to Matthew for nearly two years, and yet, no child? Do you realize a marriage barren of children is built on the shakiest grounds?â
Narrowing her eyes, Stella regarded Lindsay with renewed caution.
âWhat exactly are you implying?â
With a sly smile, Lindsay glanced toward her legs, and then back at Stella.
âMy legs were broken saving Matthew.
If I were to use this as leverage to propose marriage, his entire family, including him, would hardly be in a position to deny me, right?â
At Lindsayâs audacious words, Stellaâs breath hitched, but she swiftly regained her composure, refusing to let Lindsayâs provocations disturb her any further.
She challenged Lindsay.
âIf youâre so confident they wonât refuse you, why havenât you told Lucia and Waldo yet? And why havenât you mentioned that Matthew lost part of his memory?â
Lindsayâs expression darkened, and just as she was about to retort, Stella cut her off again.
âLet me enlighten you-there are no secrets that time wonât reveal, and memory can always return.
If Matthew had his memories, do you really think heâd marry you just because you saved his life?â
