Taking the hint, Charlene left the kitchen reluctantly, afraid of further irking Lucia.
She noticed a maid arranging the tableware and began to help attentively.
Just then, a noise came from the front door.
Hearing the butlerâs voice, Charlene paused and turned to see Matthew entering, moving in her direction.
Sporting a subtle grin, Matthew arched an eyebrow and commented, âAunt, you seem in high spirits.

Charleneâs expression hardened.
Eyeing Matthew cautiously, she asked, âWhat brings you here?â

âWhat do you mean?â Matthew spoke evenly.

Waldo and Jeremy appeared one after the other.

Waldo looked at her but said nothing.
His gaze then shifted to Matthew, and he smiled.
âMatthew, you seem to have lost weight.
Busy with work?â
âNot particularly, â Matthew replied, holding Waldo and helping him walk.
âAnd how is your wife?â Waldo continued, engaging Matthew in conversation.
The two made their way to the living room, utterly disregarding Charlene and Jeremy.
Staring at their retreating figures, Charlene whispered to Jeremy, âWhat did you discuss upstairs?â
âWe played chess.
He said nothing else,â Jeremy said, appearing stern.
Hearing this, Charlene grew increasingly uneasy.
Half an hour later, dinner commenced.
