Accidental Surrogate For Alpha Novel Chapter 6
Accidental Surrogate for Alpha
Ella
âYour pup?â I parrot, realizing I must sound like an idiot the way I keep repeating him â but itâs all too
strange and surreal. I feel like Iâm having a dream â one that may or may not be a nightmare. âWhat are
you talking about?â
I might have been admiring his physical prowess a little while ago, but now Iâm back to thinking Dominic
Sinclair is just plain terrifying. Iâve known my fair share of bad men, but none of them have ever
intimidated me the way he does. Itâs like heâs superhuman, giving off waves of energy that make me
want to curl up into a little ball at his feet.
âYou.â He narrows his eyes at Cora, then gestures to me. âIs this what you did with my sperm, you
inseminated your friend?â
âOf course not!â She objects hotly, though thereâs a noted shake in her voice. âYes, I inseminated Ella
last week, but not with your sperm. She chose a donor from our client dossier.â
âYouâre lying.â He accuses, stating the accusation as if itâs fact. âElla clearly knew about the samples â
since she came to plead your case ââ
âYou did that?â Cora blinks at me.
âYes, but I was only trying to help. I thought he might show you mercy if he realized you would never do
anything to risk your career.â I apologize, âIâm so sorry, I just wanted to help.â
âItâs okay.â She tells me gently, patting my hand and turning back to Sinclair. âThat doesnât mean
anything⦠I mean, yes I inseminated her on the same day your sample disappeared but⦠no â itâs not
possible, your sample was in a separate fridgeâ¦â She trails off again, looking back at the ultrasound
screen with wide eyes. âOh my godâ¦â
âWhat?â I inquire, beyond confused.
âItâs not human.â She murmurs again, so quietly I can barely hear her. Suddenly she whirls around,
looking up at Dominic Sinclair with true fear. âI swear, I didnât do it on purpose. I donât know how it
happened!â
âWhy do you keep saying that itâs not human?â I question, beyond exasperated. âWhat else could it be
â an alien?â
âDonât pretend like you donât know.â The infuriated man growls. âDonât pretend like you two didnât plan
this precisely for this reason.â
Coraâs hand is shaking on mine now. âElla, when I told you about the samples, I only told you half the
story.â She explains. âI had to sign a thousand confidentiality documents, because certain secrets came
along with running tests on Mr. Sinclairâs samples.â
âWhat secrets?â I demand, feeling as if everyone around me is speaking in code.
âHeâs notâ¦â She begins, glancing at the huge man nervously. âHeâs not human⦠heâs a werewolf.â
Before I can stop myself, I burst out into laughter. âNo really, what is it?â
âReally.â Cora whispers urgently. âHeâs a werewolf.â
âCora.â I tell her, almost certain Iâm dreaming now. âWerewolves arenât real.â
âI didnât believe they were either.â She confesses, âuntil I started working here. This lab is as renowned
as it is because thereâs two sides of the business. Half of our bank is dedicated to shifter samples, in
fact very few humans work here, because so few are trusted with the truth.â
Iâm starting to truly worry for my sister. âAre you high?â I ask under my breath.
âSheâs not high.â Sinclair rumbles, drawing my attention back to his face. Now Iâm sure his eyes are
glowing. The usually piercing green shade now appears almost neon, theyâre so full of light. The
evidence is right in front of me, but my brain canât figure out how to process it. Instead it shuts down. I
feel a sudden wave of dizziness, and the next thing I know, everything is black.
When I wake, Cora is gone. I sit up on the exam table, trying to remember what happened. Of course it
doesnât take long for me to recall the strange events that caused me to faint, because Dominic Sinclair
is sitting in front of me, watching me closely. His eyes arenât glowing anymore, but I remember the way
theyâd lit up from within. I also remember the way heâd moved faster than should have been possible to
rescue Jake. At the time I wrote it off as adrenaline, but now Iâm not so sure.
âHow are you feeling, Ella?â He asks me, much calmer than heâd seemed earlier.
âI think Iâm losing my mind.â I answer weakly. âThis canât be real.â
âIt is real.â He assures me. âYour friend should never have agreed to let you try to entrap me when she
knew the truth.â
âCora didnât let me do anything, and I wasnât trying to entrap you. I just wanted a baby.â I argue.
âPlease.â He scoffs, âIâve had my men run your background, I know youâre bankrupt. Obviously you
thought that if you were pregnant with my child I would pay your debts for you. You simply
miscalculated â you didnât know what you were getting yourself into, or expect Cora to lose her job for
the âmistake.ââ The horrible man has the nerve to use air quotes around his final word.
âThatâs insane!â I hiss. âI didnât bankrupt myself â my identity was stolen and I didnât even know about it
until after the insemination. Iâm not an irresponsible person, or the type of woman who expects a man
to solve her problems. I would never do what youâre suggesting.â
âI donât want to hear your excuses.â He answers harshly. âThe evidence is against you.â
âWe donât even know that itâs your child!â I remind him. âMaybe it isnâtâ¦â I have to give myself a shake
before I can continue. âMaybe it isnât human, but that doesnât mean itâs yours.â
âI know itâs mine.â Sinclair snarls, making me tremble with instinctive fear. âI can smell it, I can sense
my bloodline in your womb.â
I can only gape at him. He can smell it? Sense his bloodline? Itâs like Iâve left reality and entered a
different universe. âThis is crazy.â I can feel myself sliding back into denial. âIf werewolves were real,
people would know about it!â
Sinclair rolls his eyes and lifts a hand the size of a dinner plate. While I watch, five claws extend where
his fingernails were a moment ago. I stare at the odd and slightly sickening sight with abject disbelief.
âHow are you doing that?â
âIâm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume thatâs your shock speaking, rather than your
intelligence.â Sinclair drawls.
I glower at him, temporarily forgetting that heâs not only a man twice my size, but apparently a lethal
predator. âYou donât get to talk to me like that just because you have money and howl at the moon.â
He arches one dark brow, challenging my defiance. âIs that so?â
âYes,â I snap, crossing my arms over my chest and tilting my chin up stubbornly. âIt is.â
If I didnât know any better, Iâd think he wanted to smile. I swear the corners of his mouth twitched.
âYouâre a gutsy little thing, Iâll give you that.â
âI donât want you to give me anything.â I growl, âI want you to leave me alone.â
His eyes flash dangerously, âThatâs not going to happen. Youâre carrying my pup.â
âPup.â I say, feeling my stomach churn uncomfortably, âlike⦠four legs and a tail?â
âNo.â He answers, not unkindly. âIt doesnât work that way.â
âWell how does it work?â I question, more subdued now. âHow does any of this work?â
âWell in a lot of ways werewolves are just like humans.â â Sinclair explains, leaning back in his chair but
never taking his eyes off me. In fact, his gaze is so intense Iâm finding it increasingly difficult not to
squirm. âWe come into the world in human form and we live most of our lives the same way. Most
shifters donât make their first transformation until theyâre a few years old. It takes some effort and
training. The senses are always there â heightened instincts, sight, smell and hearing â but shifting isnât
as easy for little ones as adults make it look. Itâs like learning to speak â itâs second nature by the time
youâre grown, but it takes some doing in the early years.â
âBut how can I be pregnant with one⦠if Iâm not one myself?â I question.
For the first time Sinclair looks less sure of himself. âIâm actually not sure. Iâve never heard of such a
thing happening. Our society exists parallel to your own. A few people â like your friend â are
occasionally let in on the secret, but itâs only in very special cases and they never truly integrate. Itâs
only when someone has certain knowledge or expertise thatâs very valuable to us.â
âSo thereâs just like⦠a shadow world full of werewolves that exists right under humanâs noses?â I
summarize.
